character is one main attraction of literature product, other than plot and story telling style. even in case where the author has plot so great it will attracts like magnet, they still better put the most awesome character into most scenes to complement the attraction. resulting greater appeal. so yes, main characters are chosen by the author from the most likeable ones. resulting them be the most likeable by reader once they're read.

other scenario would be, main character's point of view will serve most appealing storyline. but this one is pretty hard to achieve without the character him/herself having potent quality too.

so, that's my opinion. as for my favorite,
him might be ginko of mushishi (sole main character, my current avatar),
or emiru/emilly of nozoki ana (female lead),
