I think those terms are derived from roles in martial arts practicing or something.

I don't think gay people would call themselves seme and uke. They usually use top and bottom. And bottoms being more feminine and submissive and roles never changing indeed only exist in yaoi/ BL fiction. That's why seme and uke are still not equivalents to RL tops and bottoms. They are unique terms for fictional characters.

you associate uke with feminine in RL, that's not the case. Uke does not mean feminine, it means someone who receive during the sexual intercourse, it's just a short way to say it. Also english gay male may use "bottom" but the word "bottom" is not universal,. other cultures use other words, "uke" and "neko" being the japanese ones.

DID I ever associate uke with feminine in RL? >:-( You don't seem to get the point of my last post Candyloop.

Didn't you read this:

bottoms being more feminine and submissive and roles never changing indeed only exist in yaoi/ BL fiction

apoparently i do not. you said:

"And bottoms being more feminine and submissive and roles never changing indeed only exist in yaoi",

"They usually use top and bottom"

"Those terms are only used in yaoi".

So i concluded that you mean "since uke is fictional term associated to yaoi stereotype, gay people don't use it because it means someone feminine , submissive and someone who never change role" And i just pointed out that uke does not necessary means feminine in rl and that it is used in rl by japanese in exactly same manner english use the term "bottom"

no need to get angry.

You should know that even though "uke" can be used to call bottoms in RL, it is still NOT the same as "uke" in yaoi fiction. In the fiction uke carries the connotation of being more feminine and submissive. Although this is not always the case, the role of being a bottom in yaoi almost never changes - that's not the case in RL.

I've seen lots of readers call the more feminine character uke in shounen-ai (meaning there's no sex at all. For example, Silver Diamond). They clearly know uke in fiction are not the same as bottoms or uke in RL.

I always considered them descriptive (of position in the relationship), like butch vs. beauty. I never thought of them as derogatory.

I don't read yaoi but just like any other word it can be a derogatory term or not depending on how it's used.

I don't read yaoi but I don't think they're derogatory terms. The people choose to be either seme and uke. Also, it's not the same IRL

Nope, and I'm not into BL :\

I guess those who would find it offensive are couples in which both parties secretly feel that they're the seme or that they'd rather not regard themselves as uke (or maybe they're just overthinking its definition).

No.
But I don't like such clearness in manga. However, I often observe this layout in best friend's relationships. It's just should be this way. Unfortunately, only few manga characters are as developed, as humans).
As far as I know Modoru Motoni and Saika Kuneida crash a little this sceme. (If you know more mangakas, I'd be very pleased to know)
