When people reach their limits

After reading this, I was sort of reminded of the fact when people are backed up against the wall with no way out, those very people turn into (for lack of a better word) some of the meanest motherf***ers anyone has ever scene. Why is it I see this aspect of humanity addressed very little in almost any form of media?
I know some media kinda talk about it, but majority of the time when they get close to the subject, they either label those people down as the bad guy (or something similar), or that the guy is in just a fit of rage. They never address that the person is trying to survive, and/or very desperate. From what I've seen, I'd say that Star Trek DSN addresses this very well by saying that while humans are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, but they're also worse than anything else if push comes to shove. Why isn't this used more?
