Does anyone know if the anime follows the manga or is the anime is an alternate retelling of the manga.

the anime follows the manga but has a lot of filler episodes.

Yeah, you should read the manga..
The anime annoyed me so much with it's fillers and "fixes" that I stopped watching it..
