Ever had a slang, or new/ancient word kids nowadays use or old people used back in WW1? Well fear not, there's a website called Urban Dictionary.

This website provides numerous abstract words with strange meanings. Now the question is, do you trust the definition that they provide? It's like Wikipedia, but less professional and with no moderation at all.

I personally trust the definition to some degree.

Well, it really depends on the word at hand. If you're looking for the legitamite definition of a word, you shouldn't be looking for it at Urban Dictionary anyway. But if you know the word is a slang word, I'd generally trust it.

But of course, 90% of the definitions on that site have a sexual tilt, so you have to be careful and tell from the context the word was in when you heard it to see if that definition is really true.

Hmmmm lol, makes me wonder why Lambchopsil is called that. So I searched up lambchopsil, it's not there. But if I type lambchop, two very interesting definitions come up.

Well those definitions were a lot more wholesome than I expected.

If a word's not defined as genitalia or a verb used to described what to do with said genitalia, I feel like UD's making some amount of progress. 🤣

Let's take a look at the publisher's guidelines, which can be easily followed even by a 3rd grader:

"As an editor, you decide what gets published. Use these guidelines while you make your decisions.

  1. Publish celebrity names but reject friends' names. more >
2.Publish racial and sexual slurs but reject racist and sexist entries. more >
  2. Publish opinions. more >
  3. Publish place names. more >
  4. Publish non-slang words. Ignore misspellings and swearing. more >
  5. Publish jokes. more >
  6. Reject sexual violence. more >
  7. Reject nonsense. Be consistent on duplicates. more >
  8. Reject ads for web sites. more >
  9. Publish if it looks plausible. more >"

Whoa at number 2 😲

Whoops, I looked you up on there. 😐

Jeez. o_o I mean, I knew that they published those things, but to see them state it so blatantly in those terms just looks... weird.

You even made a thread about this.

And you know that Dictionaries have racial slurs in them as well... here is your evidence provided by MSN Encarta. So, your reactions are uncalled for with the fact that they also allow racial slurs. In fact, the second rule was to keep it as close to other dictionaries definitions as possible for those kind of topics.

And to stay on topic until this is locked...

There are a few gems on that site amongst the filth.

Also, this is slightly different then HERE, but do we really need this thread?

Stay on topic.

Umm, this isn't a personal attack of any sort. It's just a poll to see who actually take this dictionary site seriously. It's inherently different from the Your Urbandictionary Name topic. Comparing the two of them is like saying a topic "Your favorite Naruto moments" and "Your favorite manga moment" as the same. It's not.

And also, there's a difference between a dictionary having definitions of racial terms or words and a dictionary encouraging users to post and allow racial slurs and contents.

Notice in the former, the term is strictly just defined. The latter, any racial term, definition, sentence, examples are encouraged to be added to the site to boost it's popularity among the crude. That is a big difference.

No

Quote from Urban Dictionary

Entries can document discrimination but not endorse it.
People use slurs in everyday speech, so they should be published.

So, no... it is not using it to endorse it per se; rather, it is used as an example as how it is used. Therefore, the site does a more thorough job then regular dictionaries at explaining what a word is.

Urban dictionary is an experience... It's a semi-controlled chaos that's great for slangs for those that don't understand them.
