Well the first character, "黑", means black, just like what the user above has stated.
The second character, "暗", when following the first character, turns what initially meant "black" into "darkness". So the first two characters "黑暗" create the noun "darkness".
As for the last two characters, "灵魂", is the Chinese equivalent to soul or spirit in English.

So to sum it all up, your friend has the words "dark spirit" in Chinese tattooed on his leg. 🙂
