Well... just check at The world only god knows... that manga looks pretty original But if you do an indeep check you will find it steals some of the basic from many magical girl shows. Even when it isnt a magical girl manga.

And sorry, but i dont think harry poopter have anything to do with LOTR... LOTR was the start of the "magical world" genere as we have it today... Harry poopter just uses Facts from that world... and they arent even set in the same time nor type of chars... heck Even poopter being a mage does many cooler things than poor Gandarff or ganodorf or whatever that useless mage name is 😛 .

PD yeah, yeah getting out of context 😛 but u cant have a thread without it ^^.

Is not original, but that shouldn't be the point.

If it bothers you too much, then you should stop reading it, but if it bothers you a little, but you still think the manga is good enough, then what is the problem?

Want a semi original Shounen? you won't find it, the closest one that comes to my mind is Mahou Sensei Negima, and even that one copies a LOT...

Should this even be in Shonen/Seinen? If it's only about Psyren, why isn't under the Psyren forums?

I do not quite understand why you even brought up the question. You seem to like the manga enough to use a scene as your avatar.

I do not think that it is possible to create an fully original manga...especially weekly. No one is that creative.

But, by the way, you did forget a couple of things...

Ageha's destructive ball that turns into a spinning disc (see chpt 77) is very similar to Naruto's rasengan. Also, Amamiya's scythe that can create illusions is similar to Aizen's zanpakuto

Yes, I am reaching a bit, but I thought that they were similar. Do not worry about it. Keep reading and support it...maybe someday it will be more original.

All shounen is alike,
therefore, Psyren is pretty much
as original, no, absolutely as original
as any other work of the same demographic.

if you want to trace originality to its roots, everything copies and builds on to each other...psyren is the same...instead of questioning about its originality in terms of authenticity, you should think about how well psyren took ideas and plots from other manga and build upon them

i enjoy reading psyren, but even though i haven't read mainstream shounen manga like bleach or naruto, i still noticed a lot of typical cliche shounen twists in the manga, like the whole concept of average male teen with an ordinary life being pulled into another dimension/futuristic world and learning that he's its only hope, etc

instead of debating about psyren's nonexistent originality, we should concentrate more on how well the mangaka linked the different elements taken from other popular shounen manga to develop such a delightful read....

Honestly i think this is a shonen version of Akira. if you look at the way the story is set up and the style it's akira without a political story.

well in my opinion what makes a manga very good and respected is the degree of originality.
many manga are influenced by others and some have even stolen bits and pieces to make theres feel just right.
but when we come across a manga that has more of a higher degree of orginality. it is more respected.

since we are talking shonen manga i will mention
One Piece a world with pirates and devil fruit.
Hunter X Hunter is an exotic world where Hunters rule.
Naruto a world where ninja rule.
Bleach everyone carries a sword that can transform
psyren a calling card that transfers you into the future

they all can be graded on a level of Originality.

what i believe in this topic is that psyren has a lower level of originality than the past other shonen manga i've read.
The other manga however have seemed convincing enough to me to be marked as pretty good

but in this case psyren isn't convincing me for a good level of originality.

in simple words

what does not matter is that manga steal from other manga

what matters is

is the manga convincing you of its originality.

notice the "Edit" function of each post

also, a manga stealing things from other manga is the basically the definition of "unoriginality"

it's almost impossible to ignore unoriginal aspects of psyren that the other posters had listed, and therefore i think it's safe to say that the manga wasn't very convincing at presenting its stolen plotlines as "originality"

that said, i still think that the mangaka did an okay job at building upon the cliche twists of shounen manga...after all, i'm still reading it...

most of the time, readers of shounen/shoujo manga have to discard the blatant unoriginality of the manga if they want to fully enjoy it

hmm, paradox? 😕

Originality is nothing more than a point of view, if you read something today, and see something that looks very similar tomorrow, it would seem the one you read first is the original one, even thought the opposite is the real truth.

Remember this, NOTHING is 100% Original, somewhere, someone already did that or THOUGHT about it, also the FACT that you think a plot is good, is because you can identify with it, so is very likely you had something similar in your brain all along, even thought you could never put the pieces together.

So the wright brothers are the inventors of flight, BUT we have seen countless examples of people that tought about the same things thought History.

A hero that travels to the future and sees a mess and works in the future, the present, and in the past in order to stop the catastrophe, a hero that for unexpected reasons is very talented and decides he wants to save the world, a person that throught suffering decides the world should be cleansed of all evil, and a person that regards himself as Pure Evil and Acts like one ends up saving the world... everything was made before, nothing is truly original, even the first ones evolved from something else.

If something works and WORKS right then it won't be original for long.

I am running around so lets put it like this.

Originality should NEVER be used to decide how good something is, because that is an oxymoron, if something is not original then is bound to make people lose interest in it, if a new book that looks and feels JUST like Harry Potter comes out, then it will attract a good number of people, but if it is too similar, then people would not want to keep reading it.

and yada yada yada.... I better leave... didn't read what I wrote so if it doesn;t make sense then sorry, but those are my fingers speaking, not me

Well I know I haven't come across anything like it before. Certain elements, yes; time travel, typical-shounen-esque MC that has special powers (duh) etc. But the specifics and the WAY it's done is definately original IMP.

If it is original or not doesnt really matter. Psyren is something u can enjoy and that's what good about it.
