What I want in shonen are intelligent characters. 98% of shonen are full of idiot characters who even lack normal intelligence. They act stupidly whether it is a romantic scene or fight. Just some intelligence along with some realism would be great. Also, I want some level of cynicism in main characters.

For me any genre is fine as long as it has good characters.There are already many mangas in different genres of shonen so I would hardly complain for genres, but characters...

For the shounen genre, I prefer action and/or comedy. Brownie points if there are lots of bishounen. I typically only like romance when its a secondary theme because when it's the main theme in shounen manga, its often harem or ecchi.

But nothing's set in stone, the only shounen genres I definitely don't like are harem. There are even some harem series I put up with but I'm typically gritting my teeth through those parts.

I would go for horror or action, because I like it. I really dislike ecchi and harem, as most people do when they get older.

Even after dead, we raise from the ashes for the sake of manga.

Action i guess? It is the lifeblood of Shounen after all.
My favorite Shounen manga is Rurouni Kenshin and action was a main element but i like most genres equally and the best stories serve multiple masters.

If I was forced to pick out of the options I'd pick Action or Tragedy(because if there are good times they are more brought out.)

I'm not in preference of a more cynical MC as I've come across enough annoying ones, or at least other main characters who piss me off, though Gokus are irritating too.

For genres I like with shounen, I think I prefer historical or sometimes fantasy. But good characters and story are the most important for me, and what I normally use when deciding whether I like a manga (of any demographic).

Why is gender bender in every poll nowadays ? I've barely seen any manga with that theme, and they usually aren't that great and it doesn't really matter either that the protagonist changed his gender.

I've voted action, for it's pretty much the soul of shounens. Most of the other elements from the polls are things I like to see more than action, but if we're talking about shounens then I wouldn't usually except them to do those things well. I would rather see these in seinens, but on another hand shounens are really the best source of action.

in terms of genre -- i would go with tragedy or martial arts.

tragedy in shounen is normally the sign of a good shounen storyteller since, more times then not, shounen manga tends to lack tangible stakes -- take DBZ, One Piece or Bleach for example - you can count the meaningful deaths on one hand & thats without using thumbs

and martial arts simply because i love seeing different fighting styles explored
