Do you owe your parents for the gift of life?

I didn't ask to be here, and I was treated like a jerk by both parents my whole life. They can take care of themselves when they get old.
Life is tough......but it's tougher if you're stupid.

i can't help feel that i was brought into this world so i could end up looking after them when they aren't able too... not exactly heart warming reasons but i ain't cruel enough to neglect them in older life since they do work hard themselves.

Hey man, you have my pity. I think most parents want their children to be happy. I would take care of my parents even if I'm not obligated to do so. I love them very much.
It is cruel to say your parents didn't want you, your mother went through the whole birth thing when she could've just went to an abortion clinic or just sent you to an orphanage.

Aw, that's so sweet, ares6.
I agree, there are times when I hated them, but I would do everything I can to make them happy when it's my turn to take care of them. 🙂

I'm sorry. I grew up in a loving family @.@ so I love them and I will take care of them because I love them, not because of obligation or the idea of "paying back."

Aw. Somehow that makes me feel a bit sad.

Hey - not to sound like a heartless a-hole, but I had a hard life growing up. Even though I say this now, I bet I will end up taking care of them later. At least my mom, my dad has a bunch of other kids from another wife, so they can take care of him.

Same for me, if they need my help in the future I will be there to help them. And give them support like they did to me when I was a little kid. 🙂
( If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here at MU right now typing this post 🙂 )

You'll find that later in life, it is much easier to be kind than cruel. Resolve those grudges.

This isn't a matter of cruelty, it's a matter of indifference. I grew up knowing that my mom had aborted a potential sibling of mine and being constantly told that she may have aborted the wrong one. On top of that, I lived in my car from the age of 16 because no one wanted me. My dad hated me because I was not tough enough for him because he is a Marine. He used my college money to buy himself a truck and then told me I can't go to college anyways and to join the military. Then when I got outta the military I was homeless agin for 6 months because he didn't want me "hanging around his house."
My mom on the other hand is an alcoholic who moved in with me a few years ago when she found out I had rented an apartment and now she doesn't even help me with rent and I can't kick her out because she is my mom.
BTW I was physically, psychologically, and sexually abused as a child. I don't see why I owe them anything.
Life is tough......but it's tougher if you're stupid.

I voted no.
I haven't had quite the troubles Vince has had, however I have no respect for either of my parents. Neither of them went anywhere in their life, and all they've given me is trouble.
When I went to the doctor's yesterday because my dad got medical insurance for working at the hospital, I had to fill in nearly every family-related problem they asked about. Depression, drug abuse, alcoholism, diabetes...You name it, someone in my family has it. They thrust these terrible genes on me, knowing full well of their families history. People like my parents should never breed. I swear, my family tree's branches are rotting from sickness.
I had a longer, more detailed post, but either these boards or my internets died, so I lost it. 🤢

I'm definitely taking care of my parents when I become that age.
One sad story is something that a guy told on another message board.
"My grandma (my uncle's mother) had to stay in a nursing for like two years, she was 85 I think. My uncle rarely went to see her, he hated to see her in that bad of health. Well, he went to see her one day for the first time in like six months. When he walked in her room at the nursing home he found her on her bed with her wrists slit. She had killed herself."
I don't want my parents to be alone when they get old.

oh... did I inspire you to create this? LOL
I'm sorry to hear that some members have grown up in a sad family. I grew up in a happy family, so I want to do whatever it takes to make them happy.
I love them too, but "I am my own person", no that's not me. "I am their child 😀 " must follow their footsteps!
Also, sorry I laughed at some of the posts.. but the way vinceasuma (and maybe Dark_Sage too) puts it, it's kind of funny, like it doesn't sound depressing... well, it is. but.. I don't know. It sounds mature. So good job. thumbs up
Well...i also grew up in a loving family so i will take care of them. they may have been strict with me but that was because i used to be a problem child

oh, I forgot to say,... I'd rather take my parents' advice on my career path.... although, yes I will probably regret it if I really don't like it. But, I might regret too, if I follow mine. They know "what's best", I think, so... screw my dreams 🤣
