Unfortunately there is no easy answer to this. What the anime did was to extract a big chunk of flashbacks and compile them into a continuous sequence to make Season 1 of the anime which is all almost exclusively about their past life.

The novel, on the other hand, has the same flashbacks interspersed throughout the series in-between narrations of present life events. That means that as you read the novel, you may find that a scene that you are already familiar with from the anime is as far back as Chapter 50 (not an actual example).

So what I would suggest you doing is to start from Chapter 1 and skim through the familiar scenes until you find a new scene, and repeat that every time you run into another familiar scene from the anime. This way you'll also get a better sense of the way the author originally let the story unfold to readers.

As someone who has already read the whole novel, it's well worth it if you really enjoyed the anime. It's very long, but definitely a page-turner, and is currently actively being translated into English.

I agree, to enjoy the novel full you really need to start from the beginning.

The novel tends to switch back and forth between Wei WuXian's present and past, slowly giving the reader background information, while the anime was almost fully in the past. There were even some episodes that aired information that had just been revealed in the English fan translation.

I wouldn't recommend skimming through, I think that reading through the entire novel is your best bet, because otherwise you will miss a lot of character building. The novel is really strong in showing small moments between characters, explaining more about how normal and demonic cultivation work, and includes WWX's thoughts.

The English fan translation is not yet completed, but its around 70% of the way there with weekly updates. The translations are really good though so its worth the wait!

Also, baka-updates is a superb place for manga but not as much for novels, if youre looking for more details on novels and a forum thats better equipped to answer questions like these, Novel Updates is similar to baka-updates in that its an information site but for Asian novels instead of comics.
