So, for my Japanese class, I'm giving a presentation (in Japanese >.<) on cultural trends in Japan. So far, I have Ganguro girls, Gothic Lolita, Net Cafes, Maid Cafes, Host Clubs, Variety Shows, Keitai Decorations, and of course Anime and Manga 😀 .
However, it has to be a fairly long presentation, so does anybody else have any other ideas on other trends to add to the list?
Any suggestions are much appreciated!! =^.^=

Should have posted your question in this.

You could mention Japanese games, including visual novels...

What about some cultural trends that don't deal with anime/manga like the aforementioned visual kei? Idols, video games, fashion, movies, fads, literature, etc. are all good choices you may want to look into. What I'm trying to get at is that not everyone is an otaku (which you might want to explain also) so you might want to broaden your spectrum a little bit outside such related topics.

Music would definitely be another good choice, though. (I've read that the scene tends to change very fast and that there aren't too many "classic" artists like The Beetles, etc. in the US that are still well know today. i.e. most artists will never be popular for long, maybe a couple months or so, before they fade away [although they are still alive and kicking, which is mostly only known by fans])

Kabuki theater, yakuza/gangs, food consumption, inventions/technological advancements (robots, etc.), manga cafes, internet cafes, vacation destinations, nature preservation/urban development, social rights activists (lolicon manga/anime bannings, etc.), season (what happens in each season/trends that occur in each season/etc., sakura tree viewing), popular plants, economy/job market, education (public/private schools, college, cram schools, etc.), and so on and so forth..... 🙄

...yeah, sorry if this is a little overwhelming or confusing (mainly the music part). 😐

I think circle lens and eye glue are pretty popular there right now.

I was gonna write something, then realized someone beat me to it...

I think your existing topics are too focused and should be grouped into a single section. And speaking of visual kei, I think androgyny is a quite a big cultural difference as well and really could be expanded beyond just visual kei.

Boybands. There are ALOT of boybands. Tohoshinki comes to mind. If you dont know who they are, google it, lol. They go by DBSK when they sing in Korean and TVXQ in Chinese. They are popular to the point where fans have written them letters written in blood o_o
Il even link you to some of their songs:
Mirotic
Why did I Fall in Love With You?
Wrong Number
Rising Sun
Their website: http://toho-jp.net/index.html

Dramas are really popular there to. Hana Yori Dango is probably the most famous one, and was later made into an Anime. They tend to be a bit soap-opera-ish. ^^

Yeah, they're Korean but they're pretty popular in Japan I think. I don't remember hearing that they got one of those letter though. BoA is Korean but she's popular in Japan too. She sold like 2 million albums in Japan. (I think this is more of a Korean cultural trend though :S)
Well, when manga are pretty popular that they get make into a anime. Sometimes they do get made into a drama.

Whoa... that's so... nineties... ._. Well, I guess kogyaru would be more nineties, but still.

I mean, they're around, but cult fashion for Japanese high school girls (well, some middle schoolers too) is so complex and nuanced these days that gyaru is a bit too general a label... or at least that's as I understand it. I've had this all explained to me a number of times, mostly in broken English, with some Japanese and academic jargon thrown in, and I still don't quite grasp it, but I guess that's just my limitation for that sort of topic.

It's quite hilarious how they all talk about how much they want to be unique in exactly the same way, though that trend is more prevalent with the gothloli and more fervent Harajuku types (I still associate gyaru with Shibuya 109... but maybe I'm already out of date).

...

Anyway, though there are a lot of easy presentation topics you can pick, I'm going to go ahead and throw cults into the mix. It's been an issue for a couple decades now, and although the whole thing really climaxed with the gas attack on the subways in '95, it's still pretty common, and quite easy to ramble on about. Maybe that's more sociology than you want, though.

Do you actually have to do it on multiple things? Each and every one of those topics could be their own individual long essay/presentation if you did enough research on them, imo.

As mentioned before, Boybands are really popular. Arashi, Kat tun, News are popular. Ayumi Hamasaki is a fashion icon. She is also a popular singer and tends to start trends.

Cell Phone Design is really popular too and technology is really updated. eg. Mascara tooth brush

Keep in mind the traditional things like Festivals and etc.

Fashion trends are major in japan and change all the time.

Try to find trends in their life styles and food. Traditional art is popular with the elderly.

I have done a project like this before for Japanese Language Class.

Wow! Thanks so much for all these suggestions!!. Sorry for the long wait for a response >.<
My sensei wants me to touch on several different things (she made a few suggestions that are mostly clothing trends, which is why I have a few of those but also some different things). So I guess, what I should've said was what are some pop culture-like trends or just trends in general 🙂

@ Blackout - I've never heard of Decora (so crazy and cool at the same time 😛 ), and I don't know HOW I forgot Visual Kei, but I'll definitely be including those and Kogal too 😀

@Sybear - I'm not focusing on anime and manga, but mentioning them because I do think they are really too popular to ignore. Unfortunately, someone is doing a presentation on traditional arts (which includes Kabuki), and others on technology, social issues and some more of the many great ideas you came up with, so I can't use those 🙁
The music one is a good idea though and I can use either it as a segue to Visual Kei or the other way around 😀

@hanna - I absolutely LOVE DBSK (so sad they've broken up 🙁 x a bagillion) but since they're a Korean band, I can't use them :<

@kiteh and cren - I was going to briefly mention gyaru as part of kogal and ganguro since I believe they're pretty much all part of the same fashion movement

@icecreamy - Like, sybear, other students are covering a lot of topics you've mentioned (like the festivals) :< but I like the idea of including keitai in kind of a technology topic with the mascara thing 😀

Again, thank you guys so much! I'm pretty sure I'll be able to make a long enough presentation that includes a whole bunch of crazy and fun stuff =^.^=
I may even dress up in some of the fashions for the presentation as a visual along with a powerpoint 😛 We'll have to see how daring I am to walk around the campus and parking lot in Visual Kei/Decora/Lolita/whatevercrazycostume 😛
