Girl has a tragic past? Check. Twisted male lead? Not really, but he's very devoted and protective to the girl that he's fine with harming himself and those who try to hurt her. Relationship growth? Check. Sweet romance? Check. I LOVE THIS MANGA <3. It's about a boy who becomes a ninja to protect the girl he likes.
Dear Mine
It's a sweet romance story, with some relationship growth in it. It tells about a 17-year-old girl who gets engaged with a mature 10-year-old boy. Not much lovey-dovey scenes, but I love the manga because it's cute, and I like how the story progresses. Both of the leads have a sad past, but especially the guy's. Male lead is not twisted though.
Kanata Kara
A girl gets transported into another world. She's a bit weak, but the romance is very sweet, and grows over time! I love this manga <3. Male lead is not exactly twisted but he's quite dark, and there's no tragic past.
Beast Master
I don't really remember much about this, but I do remember that they are possessive lovers! It's about a girl who encounters a boy who's a bit... wild (animal-like).
Faster Than A Kiss
Romance is a bit slow in my opinion - it takes its time. But it's overall cute and they're pretty possessive. It's about a teenage girl who's married to her teacher. Very light and happy if you ask me.
Grand Sun
Female bodyguard with a rich heir. Possessive lovers. There's a tragic past involving the female lead.
Nishiki-kun no Nasugamama
I love this! It's so cute <3. The male lead is pretty mean at first, but he turns out to be cute. He is definitely possessive of his girl. Not twisted male lead, but sadist.

Other manga I recommend:

• Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii (ongoing - romance is the main thing but there's adventure. Definitely possessive male lead, and he's twisted 😀 !)
• Hana to Akuma (Didn't finish reading this manga, but I'm pretty sure the main couple is possessive of each other. There's definitely relationship growth though.)
• Hanatsukihime (completed)
• Cheese In The Trap (ongoing webtoon - there are 4 seasons so far. It's definitely an intriguing one and is one of my favorites! Male lead is kind of twisted (more like mysterious) 😉 )
• I didn't read these manga: Hana Yori Dango, 100% Perfect Girl, Merupuri, - but I heard that they suit your criteria.
• Nousatsu Junkie
