I'd like to start off this review by saying that the art for this series is absolutely beautiful. I have to say, the plot didn't really intrigue me as much in the first episode, but the art brought me back. The use of colors and attention to detail in the animation was really spectacular. My prime example would be the very last scene of the last episode, embodying the entire frame in pink, symbolizing Oreki accepting a now rose-colored life. Absolutely amazing.
This show was one of those that I found myself watching to wind down during the end of the day. There were low stakes, but it didn't suffer from being boring like most low-stake shows do. The idea behind solving a mystery every episode kept me on the edge of my seat, but it's not like it was a gruesome murder mystery or anything, just some riddles that you may experience in a high school life, so there wasn't an onset anxiety that lurked in the background.
The character Oreki really resonated with me. After graduating high school, I found myself to be in his shoes as well, following that funny little motto of his, "If I have to do something, I do it quickly, if I don't have to do something, I don't do it at all". My life has been a little dull since graduating, going to class for the sake of going, and leaving as soon as possible so I can get home and have my alone time. But during the course of this show, I began opening up a little more. Smiling to people in the halls. Making more plans with my friends. Getting excited about my future. Taking a walk outside just for the hell of it. It's something that I didn't really imagine myself doing, but here I am, and it is honestly due to the influence this show has given me. The fact that life really is what you make it, so don't be afraid to choose a rose-colored life.
