Chihayafuru, Yuki Suetsugu's award-winning women's manga about a girl competing in the traditional Japanese card game of karuta, will be adapted into a television anime series starting this October.

In the story, a schoolgirl named Chihaya Ayase once only dreamed about her sister making it big as a fashion model, until she decides to forge her own path in life. After seeing a quiet transfer student named Arata Wataya play the game, Chihaya enters the competitive world of karuta. The story begins when Arata joins Chihaya's sixth-grade class, but most of the story takes place during Chihaya's high school years.

The manga has been running in Kodansha's Be-Love josei (women's) magazine since 2007. Kodansha will ship the 13th compiled volume next month, and there are over 4 million copies in print.

The manga won the second Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) in 2009. It is the third Manga Taisho winner to receive a screen adaptation, after Gaku and Thermae Romae. (This year's 4th Manga Taisho winner is Chica Umino's March comes in like a lion.) Chihayafuru also won the shōjo manga category in this year's Kodansha Manga Awards, and took first place in the female category of Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! awards last year.

The television station information and other details of the new anime project will be announced in the future.

I love this manga, I hope they do a decent job on the artwork because thats half the appeal of this series.

i wasn't expecting much when i heard MADHOUSE was animating this from the beginning. i just even really planned in watching this because the character on the poster (Chihaya) looked a lot like a shoujo character. so i saw a glance of the manga cover and i was right, it was a josei.

saw the casting too, and Miyano Mamoru was voicing one of the characters so...herp derp. lmao

but after that first episode, i got so amazed, and Karuta, although i've known it for a long time, never really got into watching a match. i have nothing against these kinds of games though, coz i fell in love with Hikaru no Go, and Shion no Ou.
MADHOUSE also animated it so BEAUTIFULLY. they tend to do SHINY. lolol. so yes, the anime is gonna be shiny and very shoujo-y. xD

[i also went to read the manga as soon as i finished the first episode. lawl. just couldn't wait. > w< HOPE IT GETS MORE CHAPTERS SCANLATED SOON! there's like...14 volumes! o,o]

EDIT:
