^ Akukame beat me to it. Definitely check the school to which you're applying.

In one way or another you will most definitely receive a "stipend" (gotta work for it) from the school by working as a grad student TA or if you're lucky, the PI has enough funding from grants so that you can just stick to research in the lab...

Thanks everyone. That really answers my question. So indeed there's no such thing as free pie....or cake...unless it's a fellowship i guess

Even fellowships often have requirements of the research or teach variety, unless they're national ones like NSF or NDSEG, but those are super competitive.

*facepalm. I recently got a ton of malware and trojans on my laptop, and I ran AVG and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM), but it still misses some of them...

How do I know? I used to have an active Hitman Pro 3.5, but my 30-day-free trial expired (and I wasn't quick enough to read and implement the tricks to keep it from expiring). It still scans and finds malware and trojans missed by AVG and MBAM, but I can't clean it out properly...

I'm not very computer savvy, so, for all those hackers/techs out there... help! Do I manually (search and delete) the files that Hitman Pro detected? If so, how do I fix files that need to be quarantined or repaired?! 🙁 Is there a nicer alternative to Hitman Pro that can do the same thing without incredibly long scans? Please help!! Thanks!

Edit: Feel free to PM me if the explanation is long... we can do a message relay. 😀

No, 'cause there'll probably still be registery entries and the like. I'd post your log on the hitman pro forum and have 'em help you there.

Not really. Clamwin is my antivirus of choice, and it's an overnight job.

I'd also double check the files hitmanPro picked up using http://virusscan.jotti.org/en to make sure that it isn't a false positive.

If he doesn't go insanely crazy about it....why worry? There's no cure for his condition because he's not hypochondriac. If he was, he be home all year around in his room, constantly spraying everything with Lysol and only drink boiled spring water and eat canned food....

There are two types of financial aid, merit based and need based, so the amount of money the average student gets is sorta hard to measure. It also varies widely by school, which adds in its own wonkyness. A school I turned down offered me more in scholarships and grants than the one I went to, but I made money on my scholarships whereas if I'd gone to the other school I'd be something like $100,000 in debt. Student loans have killed the credit of quite a few Americans because they don't go away even if someone files bankruptcy.

Um that sounds like OCD with a germ fixation, not hypochondria. That being said, I'm agreeing with y'all that he probably needs therapy.

oh yeah...that's true. I always get those two mixed up. Still I don;t think it's hypochondria. My dad is the same, I think once men reach 40-50 they started having mid life crisis and then start to think they'll die in like an hour. My dad keeps the window closed all year round because the wind apparently makes his joints hurt [the doctor said there's no joint problem, he's just not getting enough exercise 😀 ]......Even if only the bathroom window is open and he is in his bedroom with the door closed in the summer time.....AND he keeps drinking all those eastern asian dietary drinks because they "enhance" the chi force......Like....maybe if he stops drinking beer, that might actually help him live longer?

I get your frustration, sometimes I like to take him by the collar and shake him and yell: "You are a wuss!!" but I can't do that....I respect old people...

Use these in this order:

Avira Anti-Virus
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Super Antispyware
IOBit Security 360
Spybot Search and Destroy

Spybot as the last program to use since it literally requires an overnight.

Your choice or whatever is more convenient for you. However, computers will be computers and I find myself shutting down my system at least once a week overnight (to release programs stuck in RAM, glitches, etc.)

Shutting a computer down completely stops power going through all your components (RAM, HDD, CPU, etc.) Sleep mode essentially keeps power flowing through said components, but at a much reduced rate.

Thanks, JakeOrion.

@Comel - I'd say you get your father to see a therapist, but that'll help only if he understands that he has a problem which needs to be cured.

Please recommend me good psychological personality tests. Not only the character, but also stuff like memory, perception, etc.
