Anybody know how to bring the sound back in Windows Vista??

Sound worked this morning, then after doing some Windows updates, I had no sound at all.

After checking the volume every place I know, Device Manager saying that everything is working, and getting REALLY frustrated, I did a system restore to before the updates from this morning.

No change. Still no sound. 🤢

Any more ideas? Please? 😢

You say all the drivers are in working order?

I had this problem once, with my XP version.
Reinstalled windows, which was a pain, but it helped and the sound was restored.

Ugh...I'll buy a new computer & transfer my files over before I try to reinstall Windows on this one, it's just not worth it. 🤢

Also forgot to add that I have tried googling this problem but haven't found anything that exactly fits my situation, and I have tried a bunch of stuff that was suggested anyway (as long as it was reasonably easy & not likely to cause other problems).

Nope, speakers work fine - just plugged them into the TV to double check. 😐

Edit - much later - Oookay, this is totally freaky...my sound is back.

Checked ~45 minutes ago, nope no sound, watched a drama episode on another computer, and now my sound is back. (O_o)

Literally ALL I did between sound not working & working was copy & paste a video file onto a flash drive and take said flash drive to another computer. That's ALL.

And while I'm deliriously happy (ok maybe not quite THAT happy but close) to have sound back, I really wish I knew what made it stop working in the first place, and what made it start working again. 😕

I don't know what caused it, but I had the same thing once; I just restarted my computer, and everything worked fine again.

Well, if it worked again after a restart, I wouldn't have been so surprised, but I restarted several times in the process of trying to get the sound back & it made no difference.

Maybe my computer got jealous that I was using a different comp...? 🤣

That seems like it might be a hardware problem.
Maybe your sound card is about to give up the ghost 😕

Could be, but I have no idea how I would tell.

Device manager never showed a problem, though, which makes me think it's not hardware...but then again, I don't know how reliable device manage is for something like this.

I think device manager only shows you whether or not your speakers and microphone are working, but I don't think it shows the status of your sound card; I could be wrong though. 😳

Have you tried connecting other speakers through a different audio jack/usb slot?

I don't have any other speakers, but these worked fine when I connected them to the tv, and worked fine again when the sound mysteriously came back.

Now the sound is gone again. 😢

Starting to think my sound card/chip/whatever-it-is must be in the process of dying, which probably means it's time for a new computer as a lot of what I do needs sound. Sigh.

Try formatting before buying a new rig, just to be sure.

If this was a better computer, I might, but this one is over three years old & wasn't exactly speedy/fancy when I bought it...also, it would be really hard to back up everything I want to keep, AND it didn't come with a disc to reinstall from. (_)

If I can't get the sound going on this computer, I'll probably get a new computer, transfer everything over, and then try formatting and see if I can get this old one running again for my 4-year-old to use - unfortunately most of his games really need the sound since he can't read, so without the sound it's not too useful.

Bleah.

You can just connect the old HD to the new PC
if there's enough S-ATA ports. Downgrading from
the new HD to the old one doesn't makes any sense.
