Miyagi and Sendai hit hard in many first hours, by watching the news ....it look...terrifiying and gruesome in some way 😔 , hope they all got out safety

Yeah I can see on the news, they show pictures of the tsunami water coming up to a road, and you can see cars still moving, trying to get out of the way... as of now there are hundreds of people dead, I can only hope it doesn't get any worse. It's terrible, to make an understatement....

Well, 'japan is infamous for having loads of earthquakes', so you can be pretty sure they have earthquake-resistant buildings, so they are pretty prepared for these things, I really don't expect very many people to die.

As for the hoping for the mangaka's, that's entirely understandable, hundreds of thousands of people die every day, its much more reasonable to be worried about those that affect you over those that don't. Do you actually care about all the people you don't know about that are dying every single day? I'm more worried about any major companies getting damaged, and the salt water ruining all the land.

This is still so surreal. It's hard to believe something horrendous like this happened today.. just this afternoon. The footage showed things looking really bad. The flip-over huge ships, fast-stream of water, swept-away cars and the most horrible thing is I saw a person waving a white sheet of cloth from a high-storey building ;__;
I swear, I was inapt to do anything when I first heard, no, saw the pictures. It was like my stomach tightens, I feel suffocated, eyes getting blurry and endless worrying over the people there that I can't even fully enjoy my day today (how could anyone?)
I thought it was just a normal earthquake when I saw someone first tweeted about it. Then, the tweets keep on coming and coming. People saying noooo and scared. Then, saw the tweet about the tsunami. This! I actually can't believe the trans until I saw the live broadcast from Japan and then watched the al-Jazeera's live online too. Horrible, horrible.

Someone just tweeted that apparently 200-300 corpses were found.. /chokes ; ___ ;

Well, Japan is in a seismically active area so they do have their fair share of natural distasters, but an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 would have come as quite a shock.

At the end of the day, these people are strangers, I'm not going to cry over this - as callous as it may sound - but I don't think one life should be considered more worthy than another's. Mulling over whether your beloved manga comes out is just...

Fortunately for me, I'm not in this dire situation - nor are any of my close ones. For the unfortunate ones, I hope they get the help they need. And no more rise in the death toll...

And I'm thanking this building quality, cause thanks to it, Tokyo was pretty much spared from any really important damage. Even when the floors were shaking that much, it was pretty much okay.
Though, it seems to be only Tokyo's case, cause when I got back and saw more clearly the news about Sendai, it looked like Tokyo was lucky. I hope there won't be too much casualties. (still impressed and thanking the fact that such a strong earthquake made such "few" damages)
I guess it's going to be aftershock until tomorrow now, doesn't seem to die down does it...

Usually trolls expect a reaction. Some of the responses here seem to imply the poster didn't realize how what they were saying would be taken.

@Wotonito: The tsunami you can't really prepare for. They caused a lot more damage than the quake proper, and the death and injury toll is quite high. That aside, I know people who live in pretty "earthquake safe" buildings in downtown Tokyo, and their apartments were totally trashed and they were forced to evacuate. There were definitely some deaths from the earthquake, and it would probably have been about as horrific as the Hanshin in '95 if there weren't so much preparation. It's just that there are limitations to how prepared you can be. 7.9 on the Japanese scale (it's different from the richter) is obscenely high.

Dang. Poor Japan. It's a good thing Tokyo wasn't that hard hit. Imagine a strong earthquake in an area where everything is jam packed together.

Still, even though it didn't hit Tokyo as hard as it could have, it's still devastating. Even not counting all the lives lost, which is bad enough, so far estimated damage repair has been near 10 billion (Not sure if that has been to converted to USD, or if it's in yen. Big difference there, but I dunno.), and it's not even over yet.

Everyone in Japan, good luck! Stay alive! Be safe.

yeah early in the morning i heard there were around 50 dead but, after that a friend heard them say there were around 300, idunno if its true, hopefully not...

Japan was currently trying to recover from its recession and this natural disaster just made it worse.

By the way, if you guys remember that tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean back in 2004 the magnitude of the Japan earthquake is similar this. Back in 2004 the magnitude of that earthquake was so huge that it tilted the earth's axis by a few degrees. I dont know if you guys remember but this caused abnormal season changes throughout the world. This Japan earthquake may also cause the earth tilt again by a few degrees. Therefore, you may be expecting weird weather in the future.

Didn't realize the seriousness of the news until I came home from school. Quite an impressive tsunami, when you see the news recordings from the helicopters. Disasters are always horrible, no matter whether they're caused by humans or nature - and the people who've died, died a premature death. That always makes me sad, thinking what they'd have wanted to do with the rest of their lives.

And what an unfortunate day to have gone to the beach or gone sailing. Heard that a whole ship is missing. I can't say that I'm much affected in my daily routines by this, because I feel so detached to the whole matter (and I'm not praying either), but it's nonetheless premature human lives taken - and that's awful.
