When I was driving to school this morning, about 7 o'clock, I heard about the tsunami and 8.9 earthquake and turned the radio up-- way up.

It sounds horrible. And in Anatomy class (for some reason) at the end of the day we watched some of the footage.

Sort of stupid question... But how do earthquake resistant buildings (because I know they have plenty of them) stand up to tsunami's and an earthquake this huge?

I wish Japan the best of luck during this... Hopefully there isn't another earthquake.

My sister in law is in Japan right now. Thank god she's all right. I'm watching the news channel in my own country, the BBC and NHK world to keep updated.

All of my well wishes are with them right now. That is a horrible thing to experience... all the loss and devastation.

So far, nearly everyone I know who's living in Japan is currently safe (thank goodness!). There's still a couple people I need to hear from to make sure they're alright. But man, this devistation is really nearly just as bad as Katrina. I send my thoughts and prayers for the safety to those living in Japan and the pacific area.

Also, this video has some great raw footage of the aftermath from the aftershock earthquakes. I recommend checking it out!

This.

You wouldn't happen to know if any of the Japanese news channels have a live stream online, would you?

The Fukushima power plant situation is scary though.

You can watch NHK live stream here. Situation in Japan's getting worse... D:

Shit. In the past two months there's been earthquakes in New Zealand, South America, China, and now Japan. Anyone could be next.
I watched news clips of what's going on in Japan and it's just devastating. Everyone should start sending help now.

TV Asahi has a live stream here- AT&T is providing it for free for the next week to let people watch the footage from Japan:

Some people in this thread are clearly disgusting otakus. There are some things that are a bit more important than your anime and manga.

THANK YOU. For christsake, no one bitched about losing Friends episodes during 9/11. Some people are really fucking crude.

That's because I didn't run to MangaUpdates to cry about my fav TV show. I went to some other site. Otherwise, I'd been here n you woulda known it! 😃
Also, I'm not an otaku. 😁

why is everybody so upset about people hoping that the authors of the mangas they like are safe? about 300 people died and 500 more are missing. this is sad but there is nothing that we can do about it. why is it wrong to hope that people that the 800 people were made up of people that none of us have ever herd of instead of people who write things that interest us. i will say it plainly, I am sad that all those people died and hope aid comes soon to the survivor but i also hope that no mangakas who write things i read were killed.

It wasn't because of what they typed, it was the way that they typed it. It made them sound like they didn't care about anything else other than their favorite manga or anime finishing. I know they didn't really mean it like that, but like I said, it was the way that they typed it.

It wasn't the way it's typed!! I'm still praying no manga is delayed. I don't care about anime... 😔
At least this morning was mildly entertaining with all the videos and such.

If you don't want to be an ass, don't talk about anime and manga first. Seriously. QUIT YOUR SELFISHNESS. It's like how in Libya there's a revolt going on and all people in the U.S. were worried about were gas prices.

being in tokyo, everything here is fine with major precautions set up by the establishment

japan is certainly prepared for these disasters and i feel quite safe, albeit how the continuing tremors scare the fuck out of me

I could hardly believe it when we received an email from a friend of my family who lives in Tokyo... thankfully, the email was to tell us he and his family were all okay. Somehow, my conversation partner's friends and family, who lived closer to the epicenter, were also okay. She was up all night watching the news and was finally able to contact them in the morning. I just hope that the aftershocks will stop soon.
The news today was a terrible thing to see... I heard there are tens of thousands displaced or stranded, thousands injured, thousands of homes destroyed, hundreds dead, and hundreds still missing. I'm truly lucky that where I live there has never been a natural disaster that even comes close to this. I will be praying that those missing will be found alive and that those injured will be alright.
