9.0 Quake and Tsunami's all over Japan

I heard that there was another tsunami alert in Japan... Besides the nuclear emergency alert... Is it true?
I can't believe that nature can be so cruel... There was a huge earthquake and then a tsunami. And the replicas never stopped! One earthquake is more than enough. It was a disaster. And now it's turning into a calamity... I wish there was something I could do to stop this, to help all those people...
And seriously... I'm getting scared of the 11th day of each month.

Sort of stupid question... But how do earthquake resistant buildings (because I know they have plenty of them) stand up to tsunami's and an earthquake this huge?
I was going to try replying to this question directly but really don't want to end up hijacking the thread. You can get tons and tons of information on that by doing an internet search on the term "earthquake engineering" or even doing searches on specific buildings that are known to be earthquake resistant [such as the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco]. However even for regular houses there are building codes even if not to the same degree as skyscrapers [as it would be too cost prohibitive.]

For such a massive quake, I'm somewhat surprised at the relatively low death tolls that I've been seeing. Hopefully the worst is over.

Strict engineering requirements and regulations. When this happens in San Fransisco, expect the worse. Prayers to all those involved.
There is a simple solution to every problem; finding the simple solution is the difficult problem.

According to what's going on in my twitter feed, the earthquake is pretty much over and mostly everyone that I followed that's in Japan is okay [just recovering from the shock]. But what the real problem right now is the nuclear power plant issue 😔 Places around Fukushima and Miyagi aren't doing so well... Hope that ends okay...

I know I'm just repeating the last few comments but, yeah, there aren't very many deaths, so with that said...
This incident really isn't that big of a deal.

This is the largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan and this affects literally EVERYTHING in Japan, their economy, education, health, homes and many more.
There are after effects as well - fire explosion in a major oil refinery, submerged airport, and aftershocks in nearby countries like Hawaii, Guam, Philippines-
And you still think it's not "big of a deal"?

Well think about it, not that many people are going to die from it, that one in 2004 was a relatively big deal, this one? Not anywhere nearly as much. It's insulting to those that died in the 2004 one to even compare this to that.

Anyone who thinks this is "not a big deal" is clearly clueless. This is HUGE - destruction, flooding, loss of lives, and more.
The death toll is going to rise, probably by a lot. Of course the number of deaths is low at first, they haven't had time to confirm deaths and they won't announce it until it's confirmed. 613 are now confirmed dead, but the number is expected to be over 1000. The only reason the number isn't a lot higher is that Japan has invested a lot of time, money, and effort in earthquake and other disaster preparedness.
I have no issue with people whose first thought is along the lines of "I hope my favorite mangaka is ok" because it's only natural to be more concerned for people you have a connection with, even if it's a strictly one-way connection such as a fan for an author...but "I hope my manga won't be delayed" is just so self-centered that it makes me sick.
I just wish there was something I could actually do to help. 😔

FYI: This earthquake is top 5 record by US geological survey. Top 7 most powerful earthquakes in world history. Reports are it lasted 5 minutes and there has been as many as 124 aftershocks and some as powerful as 7.0 on ricter scale.
Reports are that Honshu island was moved 8 feet east. And that we are spinning 1.8 microseconds faster than we were before.
Also, the Tsunami has hit as far away as Chile (it was traveling as fast as 500 mph) Nothing as horrible as what hit Japan but sustained localized damage has been reported in California and we still have no world on small island nations in the Pacific. Tuvalu is only 15 feet above sea level and the Red Cross and other disaster organizations are worried that entire islands have been swallowed by the Tsunami.
Estimates of deaths at 1k is low. Three prefectures have sustained damaged. Entire villages are gone. The Tsunami swept inland as deep as 3 miles and was reported as tall as 10m. A bullet train was swept off the rails.
There is also the potential nuclear reactor meltdown in Fukushima to worry about.
That being said. Japan's super strict building regulations and ocd earthquake preparedness has potentially saved millions of people's lives.
President Obama has authorized 6 ships including the Ronald Reagan (which can provide water and act as a hosptial) are on the way. The 38,000 US military personel in Japan are being mobilized for search and rescue missions.

You can't use number of deaths as a way to judge whether a disaster is 'big of a deal'.
And how can you say it's 'insulting' to the people who died in Indonesia?
I think it's more insulting that there are many ignorant people here.
Here is only a glimpse of what happened if you haven't found out already:
akuma_river: 😲 Amazing job, the information you posted are really handy, especially "How to help:".
I was really worried about some relatives that lived there since we didn't get a call last night, thankfully, they're all okay now. Btw, how major an incident is isn't measured by how many people died, there are many things that have been affected by this. If the deaths were kept to a minimum, it would be so much better. No need to wait until so many have lost their lives to call this "major".

I think there's something wrong with your thought process. not that many people died? Just the fact that thousands of people died in this disaster, makes it a big deal, along all their livelihoods. insulting those people that died in 2004? wth dude. 😔

as long as humans die you can´t say it´s "no big deal". even if there was just one person who died it would still be horrible. every lost live is a live to much. you can´t compare just the mass of people who died. do something usefull and donate money instead of posting crap like this
