For the PS2:
-Shin Megami Tensei series a try. That is Nocturne, Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga and Persona
-The Dot Hack series.
-Might give the Disgaea games a try if you like SRPG.
-Grandia 2, 3 and Extreme
-Wild Arms series(just make sure you play 4 before 5)
-Tales of Abyss
-Dragon Quest VIII
-Rogue Galaxy
-Shadow Hearts series
-Atelier Iris and Mana Khemia
-Star Ocean 3
-Xenosaga series
-Valkyries Profile 2

For the PSP:
-The first 2 Persona games that were on the PS1 have a remake for the PSP.
-Brave Stroy
-Trails in the sky
-Tales of Eternia

Huge 2nd of the .hack series.
Also ill throw in
-god of war-
-devil may cry-
They are heavily action based, but still have a large story and character development

Also even tho it is ps1 I advise trying -Legend of Dragoon- it should be on psn, and possibly for psp(nvr checked myself). If not ps2s are backwards compatable, and this is an rpg everyone should go through at least once.

You should give the Suikoden series a try. It's a must for fans of rpg, and tends to have good plots/characters. However, beware that Suikoden 4 is considered the weakest of the series.

Also, try getting Persona 3 Portable for the PSP. It's definitely one of the best games of the console.

Beware: .dot Hack is ridiculously grindy. I remember playing the first game, going through all of the story just fine, and then finding out I was about 15 levels too low to fight the final battle. The game was designed so you had to go out and just mindlessly kill shit in the final zone for about five to six hours, after beating 99% of the game, in order to finish that last 1%. I don't know if the other entries were like that, or if it was just the first. I quit after getting to that point and watched the final battle on youtube.

Oh. And I highly, highly recommend Tales of the Abyss. It's like two games in one. I can't recall another game, ever, with so much character development. I'd also suggest Tales of Legendia for the PS2 (less so.)

I second SMT, Shadow Hearts, Xenosaga, Valkyrie Profile 1 & 2 (the first one is VP:Lenneth on PSP), and LOH : Trails in the Sky - at the very least for the storylines. The first two of Persona are my definite favorite, but they're a bit old, I guess. Try to check most of PS1's top RPGs - they should be on PSN. Also check out Valkyria Chronicles 2 for PSP.

You know at a point stuff isn't a RPG, but an action game with customization elements.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/list-48

Going to use this list. its not accurate for godsakes because it lists fallout 2 as a first person game. but its at least something.

lets see.

Darkcloud 2.
Various NIppon ichi games (disgaea, phantom brave, la pucelle etc)
persona/Shin Megumi Tensei

You should try all of them <3

Tales of the Abyss
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (1, 2, 3)
Legend of Heroes (1, 2, 3)
Jeanne D' Arc (Level 5)
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
Dynasty Warriors Series

Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2

These are a bit dark themed but my favorites on the PS2

Try steambot chronicles! (underrated PS2 games)
The graphic is a bit bad, but the gameplay is good!

If you're open to something new, you could try Monster Hunter or Dungeons & Dragons: Tactics. The first resolves around being a hunter and collector in a fictive fantasy Stone Age, and the latter is a turn-based fantasy RPG.

There has not been a single thing on this thread that I would not suggest myself, so let me add one more ps2 series: Dark Cloud. It more similar to Legend of Zelda, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. And if its possible for you, I'd check out the earlier final fantasy games. It's my all time favorite series, but some of the earlier ones are a bit dull and on the psone.

PS2:
Metal Saga, Shining Force Neo, Shining Force EXA, Shining Tears, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 1 & 2, MS Saga, Stella Deus, Ar Tonelico, the Growlanser series, Y's: Ark of Napishtim.

PSP:
Dragon's Aria, Legend of Heroes series, the Y's series, Mimana Iyar Chronicles, Tactics Ogre, Generation Chaos.

That's just for starters - it'll cost ya a small fortunte to hunt those down.
