If you had the opportunity to change the past, would you? Kill Hitler as a baby? Warn the population about a huge natural disaster? Try and prevent a war? Or is changing the past too dangerous?

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Question: Do you think the first sentient / living A.I. will be born on purpose or by accident?
Choices:
On purpose - votes: 1377 (47.4%)
Accident - votes: 974 (33.5%)
It'll never happen - votes: 554 (19.1%)
There were 2905 total votes.
The poll ended: April 16th, 2022 7:58am PDT

Now is that a good or a bad thing?

Even if you disregard the butterfly effect, it kind of feels like what's the point? There's seems to always be a new tragedy, whether it's a war, a genocide, a natural disaster, etc. Maybe I have too bleak a view of the world, but I feel like stopping 1 tragedy wouldn't actually change much. Sure you could kill baby Hitler and prevent the Holocaust as we know it, but it wasn't like he created antisemitism.

Personal tragedy? Yes, probably.
Historical tragedy? Since I live in a rich European country, no. Too much of a risk of my life standard today suffering.

Two points to Hitler:
1. WWII lead to the creation of the EU and over seven decades of peace so far, so….
2. Why does everyone talk about killing Baby Hitler? What is wrong with you psychopaths? Who has it in them to kill a baby?😅
Why not giving him a better childhood so he becomes a valuable part of society?

No, I wouldn't. Changing a major tragedy could change everything else like technology and political relationships. There will always be another disaster caused by mankind no matter what you do to change it.

I would select one period in ancient history where a significant amount of historically-significant information was present, go to that era and objectively record as much of its reality as I possibly can. If I could go to multiple periods, then to as many different important points in history as I could bear.

The unbelievable amount of accumulated knowledge we have lost to time I see as a major tragedy, maybe the biggest of all. With this, we change the past –our knowledge of it– without directly modifying what occurred in reality, and our present time remains untouched. And for the better.

Yes but it needs to have happened after my birth for me to still exist. 9/11. Is it the best choice? The Rwandan genocide was much deadlier though. Hm.

Yes. Because, you might make good or bad choices in the future, it is up to you. But you can't change past.

Would I? Well, yeah, of course.

But these tragedies I know happened in history (some of them are not even recorded rightfully in the textbook) were done by the authorities, or those who have political power than me who was a child or not even born yet at that time.. How am I, a nobody, able to prevent that? 😅

Well, unless I was suddenly wake up in the body of someone with power or were given a superpower or anything.. I just can't imagine how the scenario would be.

Idk. Probably not. The more time has passed since the tragedy, the more consequences there would be. Imagine taking Genghis Khan out of the picture and having no Mongol Invasions. You'd have a few dozen millions of people more since the 12th century and idk if at one point, there would be too many people and too little food, which would lead to mass starvation and wars. "Correcting" tragedies might create other tragedies, which might be even worse.

Could be interesting to see though. Napoleon winning, or the Ottomans winning in the siege of Vienna or even Hitler winning might create interesting worlds, but those might not be good worlds to live in. Our current world isn't too shabby, so I wouldn't change any big moments in history.

A recent event yeah (and I do have an idea in mind), otherwise no it'd definitively fuck up my life. A LOT of things would turn out to be different and unfortunately I'm very attached to many a thing in my current life.

It would be accurate to say you're trading your life for a random turn of events, in exchange for solving one problem. Definitively worth it if you're a selfless person or aren't really attached to anything in your life.

At best you're helping a universe that isn't your own. At worst you erase your own existence paradoxically.

No.

for me, I would probably either change 9/11 or covid, 9/11 kind of killed america as it was and I dont view this as a good thing long haul, along with already having all the crap I want to keep still here, possibly covid, while it hasn't affected me to much, it more or less destroyed how people exist for several years and will won't be fully impacted by it for another while, I think this ultimately is probably the most damaging thing economically to hit the world, and we still haven't fully experienced the totality of it yet.
