Japanese animation has lost one of its giants. Satoshi Kon, director of Paprika and creator of Paranoia Agent, has apparently died at age 47. Gainax employee Takeda Yasuhiro tweeted the news a short time ago, and it was confirmed by Madhouse's Masao Maruyama via the Otakon committee. Paprika, Kon's lush exploration of dreams, was clearly an inspiration for Christopher Nolan's Inception. Check out this trailer mashup that came out a while ago

Rest in peace Satoshi 😃

Apparently, he was reported to die of cancer (it never specified what type though)

But yeah, this is both shocking and sad. I'm really going to miss him. 🙁

I don't think death is tragic if the person has already done something great.
The only tragic part is that he could have done much more.

Oh man, that really sucks. I watched Paranoia Agent; stunning work.

May he rest in peace.

This is awful news. 🙁
He was definitely quite young and still had many years ahead of him. His works were stunning.

I hope he rests in peace, prayers to his family.

I'm shocked. I've always admired Satoshi Kon for his work ("Millennium Actress" is one of my favourite movies). I don't even know what to say.
It's always a great loss when an artist dies, because all things they could do die, too... Satoshi Kon was a great director and I'm sure he would make a lot of great movies. It's so sad that he had to die at such a young age. I hope he didn't suffer much.

Oh, god. No. To think of the even greater things he could have achieved - and contributed - had he lived...

Still, he had an amazing life and left behind a legacy of the kind that few people ever can. Rest in peace, Satoshi Kon. And thank you for the wonderful works of art with which you have gifted us.

It still hasn't properly hit me yet, but damn if I ain't bummed out by this. And I only happened to re-watch Millennium Actress last night! He was one of my greatest inspirations as an artist, and one of my all-time favourite directors to boot.

Truly one of anime's greatest innovators; it's an incredible shame to lose such an experimental and original artist so early on in his career, when he achieved so much already and would've achieved much more. Needless to say, I'll remember his works for as long as I live.

Thank you, and rest in peace Kon-sensei.
