Hello I wanted to ask for opinions on various english manga publishers such as Tokyopop, Del Rey, etc. Which ones do you think are particularity good or bad?

here are some of my thoughts on a couple...take into account that in some cases I've only read one series from the publisher so I'm not always getting the full picture

Tokyopop: probably the biggest and best known? Many tokyopop books (especially older ones I believe) don't translate the sound effects which is a bad thing, though some newer ones I got actually have sound effects translated. From my experience they tend not to have much footnotes or cultural info to help understand the manga better.

Yen Press: newer company, so far I've been pleased with their releases. yotsuba for example has a lot of footnotes to explain untranslatable puns and stuff

Infinity Studios: the only english manga publisher that releases books with dust covers? their books are really nice but more pricey and they haven't released any in a while, though they release ebooks

DrMaster: just for an example of one that I had bad experience with, the Tsukihime manga has english text overlayed over the japanese text in many places with looks sloppy and lazy.

Shonen Jump (owned by viz?): I like that the books are cheap but there is some annoying censorship with the language. iirc they tend to replace the F word with "muck" ex: stop mucking around. pretty annoying

what are your thoughts on english manga publishers?

viz also does stuff like minor artwork censorship and occasional name changes. not enough on any one title to keep me from buyng it but enough to irk me.

I think Del Rey is good because they explain things at the end of each book.
I like Yen Press because they pick up projects other publishers dropped.
I think Dark Horse is pretty good too..

Isn't this topic sort of like this one?: http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?page=1&tid=14214

Anyways, I'll keep it short (or at least try to):

I hate Tokyopop, their numerous typos and spelling errors really irritate me.
I am more favored towards VIZ, not because most of my manga is licensed by them, but they don't tend to make mistakes too much. The only problem I have with them, is that a lot of their manga [mainly shounen jump stuff] get overrated, too quickly.
DEL REY, I am perfectly fine with, the extra dollar doesn't tend to bother me, unless if I am grabbing a bunch of books <.<...So far, I've only noticed one spelling error, which, is quite good.
I haven't gotten anything by Yen Press, yet [but will when Crimson-Shell and Pandora Hearts come out.]
Nothing by DrMaster, and I only have one thing by Dark Horse - CLOVER's omnibus edition, quite nice, but they need tougher binding, there's a bit of a crease in the middle of the spin. Kind of irritating, if I do say so myself.
CMX is pretty good, I haven't found any qualms with them yet, but I do think they should work on their covers a little more. [especially when some of the titles almost take up half of the cover page XD].
ComicsOne/Infinity Studios, is where I have a bit of a problem, now, they wouldn't annoy me, if they didn't stop printing the graphic novels, and just go to e-book versions coughNOWcough. I'm not going to buy those D:<.
Go! Comi, is fine, but I only have one series by them, so that's not saying much <.<...

I didn't notice the topic...it is rather similar but I guess it's a little different cause that one is also comparing published manga to scanlated manga.

It's funny you mention NOW specifically because I just got volume 4 recently (it was the last copy, and compared to vol 1-3 reprints the quality of the book is awful) and I've looked for volume 5 and I can't find that junk anywhere, amazon, rightstuf, barnes and noble, ebay...their website isn't even working at hte moment http://www.infinitystudios.com/index.php and plus I totally agree with you about the ebooks...I don't wanna read stupid PDF files ;( Wouldn't be surprised if they went out of business.
