Finals!
First off, I'd like to say good luck to those of you that have finals now or very soon. And if you already took some, hope you did well~
(My first final is in 4.5 hours based on the time I am writing this news post)
Anyways, on with the poll! Interesting little poll here suggested by member juliej... Perhaps I should've saved this one for Valentine's Day, eh? But of course, we already know that most people will vote for the "maybe", but it's always interesting to see the numbers for the other choices.
(I apologize to any people that take offense to the word "otaku" for the lack of another word)

Previous Poll Results:
Question: How loyal are you to your favorite Mangaka(s)?
Choices:
I only read series from certain Mangaka(s) - votes: 116 (1.1%)
I have my favorites, but read others only if they are recommended - votes: 876 (8.4%)
I have some Mangaka I follow, but I'm always trying new ones - votes: 7504 (71.6%)
I don't have any favorite Mangaka(s) - votes: 1980 (18.9%)
There were 10476 total votes.
The poll ended: December 6th 2008
As expected, most people take the middle ground. I feel sorry for the few that only read series from certain mangaka. You guys gotta try new things and explore!

Why do people take offense to the word otaku? It just means you're a obsessive! I'm a bit of an otaku, and I'm proud of it. Maybe it's because of a few negative stereo types? Anyway, I'd date one. Unless that person had serious hygiene issues. I joke, but I wouldn't date that person otaku or not.
It's always fun to find good manga. Usually I'll follow them if they have awesome work. I have a few mangaka I follow all the time, and some I always shun.

Well...the actual traditional meaning of the word otaku was meant with a negative connotation, lol. Not that I know anyone, Japanese or elsewise, that takes it offensive...but, you never know! Better safe than sorry ^.-
Ugh..finals...and JLPT this weekend (tomorrow in fact). Fun times, fun times...>.>
I used to just pick manga at random to read (and I still do to an extent), but I'm more likely to purchase one by a mangaka I already know and like than viceversa. Plus, I own every manga that certain mangaka have done, like all of Anzai Nobuyuki's works and all of Mashima Hiro's..XD

Thanks for wishing me luck! I've got two finals on the 16th (Japanese 201 & ITE100). I lucked out not having an english final on the 17th, so that saved me some studying. Even though I'm only doing 12 credits, I still have a lot to study for. Anyways, good luck on your final!
And yeah, to the guys who voted "I only read series from certain Mangaka(s)" you gotta go out there and read from other Mangaka's too! there's so many choose from and who knows, you many find a new favorite one. =D

And in Japan, there are more than anime/manga otaku, there are otaku that get obsessed over cars and such. I imagine it's like a person that has everything associated with that obsession hobby. ie. car lamps, bedsheets, tables, paints, wallpaper, etc.

For me it would depend how sociable they are. If they'll go to parties / concerts, and even if they drink, that'll be great. However, if they're the kind of person that doesn't like to leave their house... or is anti-drinking that would be a problem. I already dated a guy before who wasn't allowed to drink, but we would go to the same parties. It was always kind of awkward thinking how he was sober all the time, cause I felt like he was judging me. Wasn't a huge deal though.
For me personally, I find the word otaku to be negative and so it would depend. if they are truley an 'otaku' (with like a whole room full of anime stuff, and all the other stereotypes) then probably not. If they're like me where they still read/watch so much / go to cons, etc.. but still can maintain a social life then that'd be perfect 😉 haha~

Good luck on everyone's finals =] But to everyone else, I think the internet[and also this forum] uses that word "otaku" too casually. If you go to japan, you'll see what an real anime/manga otaku is, just cause you enjoy it a bit or spend a bit of time reading manga/watching anime, that doesn't even match the word otaku. An real anime/manga otaku basically lives his world in the anime/manga world, and everything he thinks/does has something to do with that, and they will do some drastic things like even skipping school or something to buy their favorite new anime/manga stuff first when it comes out.

Not necessarily... Is it really that strange skipping school to get something you're excited for? >>;; College in Japan is extremely easy to skip without dire consequence so I don't think such a thing would be a big deal.

A lot of people on this site could probably be borderline otaku. So of course they voted the one to suit themselves (myself). :=)
