I'd say, you don't really know if you would or not until you're actually facing a time when you have to and your base instincts take over. You can't predict situations that are the exception. Ethics play no part.

On another note, I'm female. I've been in six fist fights in my life. Four against guys, two against girls. I've "won" five of them. I lost against a girl. Tiny little thing too. 5'4 and probably 100 lbs. She hit like a sledgehammer.

I think you can hit a girl as long as it isn't a bashing. There are ways to control your strength so if the girl is weak, hit her lightly, if she isn't and has a bit of muscle and can take the guy, then he should be able to hit her a bit harder. However, no one should really be hitting anyone unless it is a fair fight.
