The party kicked him out and he roams the town for a while before meeting up with three of his students from a long time ago... or something like that. He forms a party with them and they start getting a lot of attention.
The other party is bad, obviously, and tries to kill the hero's party but fails and ends up dead themselves.... or something.
Any idea which manga I'm thinking of?
