Thejapanesepage.com has some stuff up, as does guidetojapanese.org, but these two sites won't really get you to a functional level. You should consider investing some money into some sort of actual text book. The Genki series is pretty easy to find and a standard at many colleges for entry level classes. I also know several people who swear by RTK for learning Kanji, though I personally can't get behind it. It feels too unnatural to me, but I have a weird history with the language being part Japanese but raised mostly white.
tl;dr
Thejapanesepage.com and guidetojapanese.org will get you somewhere, but not very far
The Genki textbooks will get you farther, functional to a degree at least
Remembering The Kanji, another textbook, may work for you to learn kanji in a time efficient manner.
