many manga get adapted to anime in form of series and ova. some manga even get movies.. sometimes the anime comes first and gets adapted to manga like mahou shoujo lyrical nanoha
example: beelzebub - manga - anime

Like shadowsakura said, most anime are derived from the manga; and in most cases the manga is much further along the storyline of the anime. You can read manga if you want to get through the storyline faster without any fillers.
