Still I've never actually seen it. Could this friend of yours be mistaking the "bara" in yaoi bara with Takarazuka, which is like a GL-themed theatre/manga movement in which there are manly/cross-dressing women? They aren't overly-muscled or hairy though... And it isn't smutty. Just gorgeous women in traditionally masculine roles/clothes.
