Owned manga

I'm a bit of a collector and so like to collect manga. Currently there is no way on this site to differentiate between the 'read' state and the 'have' state of a manga.
I have manga that I haven't read yet (and probably won't for a while), or manga I've read but don't have. A simple text file with a list of all owned manga has long since grown impractical and offers no nice integration with an online database (with constantly updating information).
Sure, I could create a custom list and dub it 'Owned', but this way I lose the reading state information... Creating multiple custom lists for each state (reading, complete,on halt, dropped) seems a bit impractical to me and the difference doesn't show in the release/series list (same icon).
Another solution would have been creating a second account purely for keeping track what I have and not... but needing to login/logout each time is tedious and not sure if this is against the rules.
What I'd like to have is a state beside the reading state with for example the options:
Collecting and Complete (or at the least a simple boolean to denote the have state).
I'd also like for this state to be viewable in the manga listings (via for example a different row bg colour or an icon overlay)
This way when using the search engine I can quickly see which manga in the results I already own and thus can read immediately, without needing to order or search and download.
If someone knows of a way to do this with client-side scripting, I'd love it if you could share.
Not sure if many other people will use this, but I think that this would be a nice addition for collectors at least.
I think this would be a great addition.
Something where you could mark off number of volumes owned.
I buy a LOT of manga on discount, or used, or at swap meets so I end up with funny volumes, or gaps in a collection. I do not read them until I have the complete set, so I often have a hard time remembering which volumes I still need. If there was a way I could just come here on my phone, look at volumes owned on a manga page and be one my merry purchasing way I would find that fantastically helpful.
That is why for this feature there could NOT be a feature like read, because that is 'read up to' and not every one owns sequential volumes.
To see what friends own, or are collecting would be nice. I got my friend a volume she already had of a series she liked this Christmas. If her page here reflected what volumes she owned I could have avoided this mistake.
I also lend manga out to people at school, in club, or just to friends and I have a very hard time keeping track. Over the past ten years I have ended up with over 100 volumes of missing manga that I cannot account for. Having a second account here for keeping tabs on who I lent what would be of great help. It would also help me remember who I borrowed from. I have had the same volume of Yu Yu Hakusho since middle school and never could remember who lent it to me, and they never asked for it back. It sits on my shelf providing occasional guilt over my unintentional book theft.
If you are familiar with myfigurecollection.com, largely a database for anime/manga/game figures, posters, dolls, plush, and artbooks, they have a feature called 'notes' where you can write a comment that only you see on a manga's info page. I think that would also be helpful.
EDIT: I will also say that notes will come in handy for the collected feature because I often buy a manga in Japanese, then end up buying it in English. I also have some in Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. The volume content is not always the same. Spanish especially, they love the tiny little 2-3 chapter books you pick up at newsstands. There has also been a history of manga being published in English in comic book form. Ranma, Ragnarok, Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon, etc received this treatment. I am unsure how you would denote that.
Perhaps a drop down list of the volume number, and then a drop down list of type (bunkoban, tankouban, kanzenban, etc) would be helpful as well as there are different types of releases for the manga. Maybe a third list of 'Japanes, English, Other' as well?

There is a way to make the icon different to represent reading/completed/dropped etc. on custom lists, except for some reason I have complete mindblock and can't remember how. I've done it before... arghhh. You can change the custom list type to wish list or reading list or whatever.
EDIT: ah, found it, if you go to 'My Lists' on the right sidebar, then at the top choose 'Edit Lists' there is a Type column on the right to change to Read/Wish/Complete/Unfinished.
However, I still think your suggestion is valid. There is no way to represent say that you were buying a manga, then it got dropped by the publisher (worst nightmare!!) so you want to carry on reading but you can't. Let's see what the mods think...

I totally agree with the addition of per volume 'have' markers. I thought to keep it simple, you took it to a complete new level (which is better, but I think allot more work) 🙂
I do believe this would make the user interface a bit more bloated... I'm curious what solutions will be come up with.
Maybe a subpage with a list of all volumes with a language dropdown list and a checkbox for each?, and for those with JavaScript enabled a simple overlay box?
Store links could be added to such a page (if wanted), though not sure about the usefulness (different countries, many stores)... maybe something like a few international stores with a toggle mark if they sell it (i.e. Amazon: no, JList: yes), I imagine this will be hell to manage and keep up to date though.

Just wanted to bump this up, because I have a similar idea/issue.
There is manga I want to keep (it doesn't matter whether it's printed volumes or computer files), and there is manga I only read online, delete after I read it, or give away to friends. So it's important for me to keep the division, or just keep a special "collection" list.
But there is no way to create such a custom list because it concerns not only complete manga but both complete & reading lists, which would create a confusion if they got blended together. Also, it would ruin the statistics.

I only have 64 volumes of manga right now, from 11 different series, so I track them in a word document, but my collection has grown exponentially in the last year alone, and I also think that a feature to track what I own on this website would be very helpful.
I also used to track what series I was reading and had completed in a word document but it wasn't at all practical. That's why I created an MU account in the first place, so I could use the list feature, and it works a thousand times better. Perhaps the "owned manga" should be a separate feature from "my lists."
So, my concept for the "owned manga" suggestion, incorporating some of what others have suggested:
-a thumbnail pic for each series (you can recognize them at a glance) with title underneath
-and when you click on the pic, it tells you which volumes you own
-this could have various features for each volume, such as the language, whether you have multiple copies of the volume, where the volume is currently located (eg. at home, in the attic, lent to John Smith etc.)

Yes there is, you can create your own lists.

That does absolutely nothing to help with what you own unless you own the entire series only.
