I read this thread on Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/OtomeIsekai/comments/v5cr61/what_would_an_oi_in_your_country_of_origin_be_like/ and I find it interesting because most Otome isekai are set in a pseudo-European setting, that is badly researched as it’s mostly a mix of Rococo and 18th-19th century with only bits of Medieval elements and tropes originating from historical Eastern royal courts (like royal harems or indicating the ruler through metaphors), or in a generic Chinese one or in a generic Korean one and I would like more variety or a better rendered typical setting based on actual research and on a specific culture (France, England and Germany are very different from each other) and a determined time period (ex. Shang dynasty China isn’t Tang dynasty one or Gojoseon Korea isn’t Goryo one). Regardind my country, Italy, I can see our heroine transmigrating in Tryphaena, a Roman noblewoman who’s the nemesis to her former lover Giton one of the protagonists of the “Satyricon”, and we readers discover what happens in the initial and ending parts of this novel that were sadly lost through her adventures or in the character of Colombina of the “Commedia dell’Arte” or in the warrior princess Fantaghirò of the fairy tale “Fanta-Ghirò persona bella” or a in a female version of Colapesce of the namesake legend or in the Etruscan prophetic nymph Vegoia or in the Roman noblewoman Lucretia (and thus her story would be trying to not be raped by Sextus Tarquinius and being then forced to kill herself for having been dishonored while dealing with the misogyny in Roman society) or the countess Matilda of Tuscany, one of the most important and powerful medieval women, or in the doctor Trotula de Ruggiero, a female physician who wrote important texts of gynecology and obstetrics or in the female knight Bradamante of the epic poems “Orlando innamorato” and “Orlando furioso”. She could end up having adventures in the “Novellino” and in the “Decameron” or a search to find herself in the “Hypnerotomachia Poliphili” or in the theological works of Joachim of Fiore, like “Liber figurarum”. She could become an haruspex or a businesswoman or a judge between the Etruscans (Etruscan women had more liberties compared to Classical ones and there really was a woman who became a judge) or a warrior between the Cisalpin Celts or a priestess with power over snakes of the Marsian goddess Angitia or a disciple of Pythagoras in ancient Kroton or the talented and cultured daughter of the poetess Nossis or the amateur sleuth that discovers who killed Ötzi and why they did it or a kind nun who manages to help Beatrice Cenci, her lover and her siblings having a happy ending instead of a tragic one or one of the women who participated in the Sicilian Vespers. It think a story in which our protagonist is a saint in the Middle Ages would be interesting and it would break the trend of the saintesses in manhwas and mangas because it would analyse what sanctity actually is in Christianity and it would deal with religious piety and the cult of saints and our heroine wouldn’t be the typical naive clumsy shoujo protagonist since many Christian saints were smart strong-willed determined women, just look at Saint Scholastica, Saint Clare of Assisi and Saint Catherine of Siena. Also, the plot would be based on hagiographies and the ones that came from popular or very old sources present legendary and fairy tale-like elements too. This kind of story could also touch the figures of the martyrs if it’s set in the Antiquity and inspired by the passiones.
