I made script for Greasemonkey(Tampermonkey on Chrome) about this, so feel free to use it if you want. It will split manga and novel releases onto their own columns.
Will a version for Firefox be available in the future?

You can already use it on firefox, you need to have the Greasemonkey addon to use it.
You can also use this on Opera, more info about browsers here.
Custom releases page script for Mangaupdates
Customises the regular releases page on Mangaupdates by splitting the releases into two different groups (Novel, Manga).
Also allows users to hide/show the content on releases page too. (novels, manga and oneshots)

Would it be possible to make an update that splits other areas into novel/manga categories, like searches? Thanks for your help!

You can already filter search results by type using the genre search, or by simply adding "type=manga" (/manhwa/manhua/novel, etc.) to your search result link.
~~
Anyway, the script for either is a good idea, but I'd rather have the results show up in "tabs" instead of next to each other.
You can PM me if you need a temporary (freelance) cleaner/redrawer for some project. Especially if it's something with nice art.
Being the lazy person that I am, I'm not likely to accept anything long-term though.

The script that's already been posted seems pretty nice, but I just thought I'd mention the Power Search I created some time ago: http://openings.moe/Yay295/MUPS/
It basically lets you do multiple advanced searches at once, and combines the results for you.
(You can also check out openings.moe while you're there if you want! The pages are unrelated; I just happened to have permission to put stuff on openings.moe's server, so that's where I put it.)

There's almost no difference between it and MU's genre search. And choosing genres is way more convenient in MU's version...
Plus, there's no rating nor year of serialization in the results...

Oh, sorry. I didn't know you could search for two genres at once. Could you tell me how? I'd also like to be able to search for all completed works, excluding one shots. How would I do that? What about all manga with at least one release that have been scanlated and are one-shots?

I know about the options you have listed but when you filter types, the results aren't completely one category, the manga and the novels sometimes get mixed ex. you're searching for novels and there are manga mixed in and vice versa.
I agree with you about the script though.
