Toothpaste to remove scratches?

Does using toothpaste really work to remove scratches from CDs? And are there any other methods to remove scratches from disks? Thank you for your replies!
I've never tried it before, but I know there are machines out there that can fix scratches, depending of course on how deep it is. If it's a really deep scratch then don't even bother, cause nothing will be able to fix it. Light scratches can be dealt with pretty easily.

Sometimes; it depends on the extent of the scratch. Last year I moved my xbox while running Gears of War and the xbox scratched 3 rings into the bottom of the disc. After applying toothpaste and washing it off at least 40 times, it worked again.

Contrary to popular opinion in this thread I heard that it's too harsh...?

I wouldn't do that 'cos all of these products and methods are abrasive, meaning there's quite a strong possibility you'd ruin the cd instead by damaging the surface of the data.
Just clone the cd or something.

The toothpaste method is a last resort, so you're using it in situations where the cd isn't fixable by other methods. It works sometimes, and if not, you've ruined an already broken cd. And it's tough to clone it when it's not reading 😛
