I made this thread from looking on 4 chan. Umm.... well, I started watching old anime when I was a kid. And now it seems that all anime is directed at pervs and little kids. Though some anime is great like Gankutsuou which is visually stunning and has a great story. But, other anime like back then had great art that was grim and dark like the series. Whats your opinion?

I think it's probably about the same. There tends to be a much larger volume produced these days, and because of that we get both more shows that are great (read: Mushishi) and a ton more crap to swath through. I mean, it's not like it was all great in the past either- there was a ton more than LOGH or Totoro, it's just that time causes the crap to be forgotten.

I second that. With that said, it can be looked at from both directions. Old anime may be better simply because we only remember the good ones, or that new anime is inferior because they are so widely mass produced that the quality often suffers. With that said, looking at it from the other view, modern anime is superior to old anime. Although we don't remember the bad ones, bad anime did exist. If both of them have good and bad animes, then the only thing you can compare them on are the basics, plot, artwork, music, and voice.

Plot: in terms of plot, a new anime is better simply because there are so many unique plots. With that said, with years upon years of animes upon animes coming out, a wide variety of plot is bound to get covered. A flaw to this is that not many of them are original on their own, but merely an improvement of a previous concept, so in a view of originality, new anime suffers, but in terms of plot twists and complications, they tend to excel.

Artwork: undoubtedly the artwork today is superior both in animation and in graphics and style. With that said, old style anime is not without its own charm. Although I myself love modern anime, the sharp faces, the shimmering eyes, the beautiful hair, older animes tend to be more rounded, and in fact more realistic in some aspects such as rounder faces, and non annorexic (non-clamp) bodies.

Music: Music, and sound is undoubtedly superior in terms of sound quality, and instrument availability, but depending on the type of music it may amplify the mood, or drown it. Modern music tends to be catchy and hip (in fact i love a lot of anime intros because they're so catchy), and they are chosen specifically for that reason, but then there are classics that people will always love. With that said, who here can honestly say that the original gundam intro, and the original gundam sound effects are better than the modern ones? Honestly? Has anybody heard them? In my opinion, music has made leaps and bounds over the old school anime.

Lastly, voices. I doubt the anime voice acting industry was as big back when anime was new as it is now. Voices are fine tuned and picked to match the character, and with the popularity of anime, they have a larger pot of voices to choose from, compared to the past when the anime industry wasn't so big.

So overall, new anime does have the edge over old animes, but that SHOULD be the case. After all, what kind of industry would anime be if it got worse over time? Remember, old animes may be classics, and they may be liked simply because they are classics, but classic =/= best. Yes, it is enjoyable and best at the time, but even classics are victim to the test of time. Don't say a new anime is worst simply because a mass number of bad and good anime are constantly being pumped out. you need to remember, in the past anime was a small industry. You didn't have much to choose from so good ones really stood out. These days, there's so many bad animes that people forget, although the plot sucks, the music, the voices, and the artwork still had a lot of work put into it.

Yeah like the previous person pretty much stated you cant really compare them.Like any medium they are each their on generation, you could consider the old anime a stepping stone to the new ones, being that 90% of the most popular artist now were kids at that time, new anime can be a testimonial to the work of the old,as all the artist say an anime from their childhood is what inspired them, such as Akira while considered a classic, many actually dont like it but it was the biggest influence to Masashi Kishimoto the creator of naruto as well as Seishi Kishimoto the creator of O-parts hunter. As such,Due to technology, the anime of today can look a whole lot more visually stunning, but at the time, the older animes were as visually stunning.and with plot it is with the interest of that Era of time. With voice and music, you cant really say they are better because there is more to choose from because studios will sacrifice quality for quantity which leads to lower quality.Well thats enough of me talking in circles.

I have to disagree with the art some of the art in anime in the 80s and 90s were fantastic actually showing grit and darkness into worlds. I remember watching Fist of the North Star when I was around 10 and was slapped with the awesome art that was way different from Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon. Though it is not always true there is quite a few screw ups because it was done by hand like Mobile Suit Gundam there was actually a lot of frames that shown gundams disfigured. But, today minus the screw ups it seems that we have less of the core art elements of anime. Take another classic anime Armitage III was a cyberpunk tale that used actual elements from film making using low-key lighting like noir films that was gritty and horrific as was the plot. Now we have art that seems to be the same nothing dark. These days Japanese animators won't take risks and gamble on the art anymore more likely they believe it will shun new viewers, I really strongly believe that you are right in some places but, wrong in others. I can consider them equal in a way but, like I said everybody is beautiful never anyone ugly or realistic anymore. Though my argument to others can't float I believe that quite a few people feel the same way.
