In the manga the lead's parents are divorced and he lived with his White-American mother. As an adult he visits his martial arts instructor Japanese father and there's a lot of tension/awkardness with their relationship. The lead is also reunited with a childhood friend, who is also the lead's father's martial arts student. The lead and his childhood friend become a couple.
