Japan Earthquake and Tsunami - 1 year later.

Today at 2.46pm, the warning sirens sounded across North East Japan. The coutry stood still for a minute to remember the victims of last year's twin disasters.
Today's crisp sunny weather bears little similiarity to last year's heavy snow. It seems an appropriate image of hope for the future, as everywhere the ice was melting and Spring was tentatively poking it's head in. Having been out to the coast several times over the last year, having met the people trying to rebuild their shatters lives, and having seen the mind-boggling scale of work still left to be done, I hope that this day, those of you not in Japan also spare a thought.
It is easy to get caught up in the present and forget the past - a new disaster, a new war, a new celebrity scandal - these things mark the passage of time and Japan becomes another statistic and another page of history. But, as manga fans, I hope that you, at least, will remember 20,000 lives lost, and many many more damaged.
Remember Japan. 2.46 pm JST - 11/03/2011

Lots of other things to remember, like how the poor whales died in Japanese whale hunts.
People die every day. That's reality. So do something more constructive, like helping people, or by stimulating their flailing economy by supporting their industries, and stop pirating manga.

A year already?
Man, that was one hell of a year, but it still flew by.

Well, victims doesn't just mean the human ones. I also pray for the animal victims as well.
I don't think the fact the people are dying every day means we should stop thinking or caring about them. I could easily apply the same logic to Haiti or the Horn of Africa. The fact of the matter is, one person can't help everyone, everyone must help each other. So even if I can't fly over the Haiti and help, or give food to those suffering from drought in Africa, or solve the thousand of other problems around the world, I don't think I can be critisised for at least remembering they exist.
As for helping, I regularly volunteer in Ishinomaki, helping to rebuild and clean up, I also help out in animal shelters caring for the animals abandoned after the disaster, I have donated money, time, and effort. The reason I never thought to justify myself is because not a lot of people can, and my small contribution pales in comparison to others. I don't thing people should be judged based on how much or little of themselves they can give, only that they care enough to give at all.
Also, I live in Tohoku. I am supporting the economy by being here, by buying my food from the local farmers who are struggling because people are afraid of radiation. And I do buy my manga, I only use scanlations to check my translation since my Japanese is far from perfect.
I don't want to argue, since that never leads to anything constructive and I'm sure you're a good person, I just wanted to explain my reasoning and if you disagree, then that's up to you.

If you care about this, convince the Chinese to stop eating tuna. I'm dead serious. That's the only way that will ever stop.
Otherwise, first response to a thread like this is a troll? Gotta love how apathetic the internet likes to pretend to be. Because having an actual reaction to something is somehow less realistic.
All that said, it's a tragedy. Tragedies are worth spending a moment remembering. No one expects you to go dump your life savings into a red cross donation bin, a conscious thought about a real situation costs nothing.

I do agree with you, it's not just that I'm unsympathetic, or whatever. I like how you are helping and volunteering and in fact, I do admire you for it. Sorry for thinking of you as one of those who just talk and don't help. My apologies.
My two cents on this thing is that tragedies are best let go of. It was a natural disaster and no one's fault, and no one can bring people back to life, so I believe it is more important to live life happily than remember something so tragic. And do constructive things. There's not much you can do for a dead person, but so many things you can do to a person who is still alive. And yeah, I should also do something constructive to help society than sitting here typing some daft reply.
Thank you, I do sometimes lose hope in humanity...
