Most of us here don't have any real issue or problems with reading manga over the net or via a computer. I don't know how contracts are setup in Japan, but if a manga that had a moderate following got canceled do you think it'd be cool if the author was like, "well i'm going to continue the story on my own and i'll publish it online."?

I really got into a manga called Hatsukoi Limited but it got dropped pretty early on. I don't think it was too popular, but i'm sure theres at least 1000 people on a global level who really enjoyed it. For running in a magazine, thats probably way too low to be published, but online... if you could get 1000 people to pay $1 an episode... thats a gross salary of like $52,000 a year assuming you still put an issue out every week. And thats the low end. I want to say that I read on wikipedia that Shonen Jump sells like 2.7 million copies copies. Even if your manga only got like 1% of votes on a popularity poll, thats an insane amount of money if you can get even half of that follow you.

I don't know what mangaka I hope that the right word get paid or what the cost of living in Japan is... but even with only 1000 loyal fans $52,000 can't be that bad of a salary. Especially considering you're now on your own and don't have any restrictions on what you can do.

Has anything like that ever happened before? I think its be a pretty cool idea. There are alot of anime that get dropped that I really liked and wouldn't mind paying $1 to see continued.

Even if contractually they couldn't do it... if the mangaka started up a new series and decided to launch it online, do you think people would follow? To me, the internet opens up opportunities like this that I haven't really seen exploited. It would be even more awesome if the mangaka noticed sites like this and was like, "hmmm... I have an english fanbase... I wonder how much would it cost to get an english exchange student to translate it for me every week?" Scanlators do this for free every week... I can't imagine an exchange student who's into manga would really break the bank nor would it really be like insane effort for them to do. Would you support it?
