So Disappointed

I'm not a fan of sad ends in general so I put this off for a long long time, but it was always on my mind. So when I finally found the time to read it I was so disappointed that I just could not enjoy over half of the story. There's nothing wrong with the story, plot, writing or characters. The characters are so enjoyable, in fact, that I wish I could read about them in a different story. It's not your usual BL. My enjoyment was lost for purely personal reasons.
I don't believe in fate in the slightest. I believe in free will, coincidences, and actions with consequences. I don't have a problem reading stories with fate. It'd be pretty boring to always read stuff you agree with. But this story relies on fate....heavily.
A spoiler free illustration: Imagine a fairy tale story where Rapunzel escapes her abuse in the tower, meets and falls in love with the prince but she gets captured back into the tower. But instead of fighting tooth and nail for her freedom, she just gives up. The remainder of the story is the adventures of Rapunzel trapped in the tower. More than half the story Rapanzel acts like she doesn't have a choice, she doesn't have free will, she gives up her dreams of freedom cause she's FATED to be in this tower. And she never escapes.
If she had willingly gone back to the tower out of a sense of responsibility then it would've been a different story and I could've enjoyed it. But she's forcibly taken back and just kinda...miserably gives up. And I can't enjoy that.

I regret myself bc i didn't find this novel faster! First, i truly like Han Xin personality, he doesn't want to be protected at all, he isn't clingy, plus what i like the most he's so 'human'. He feels lonely sometime, wondering whether what he did is the correct thing, also even though he just want to live freely and just want to run away, he still know his responsibility and didn't run away from it
I also like Murong,
Their sweet moments at the beginning, rly make the ending give me more feels & cry a river. i really recommended this novel to anyone who wants read BL with plot & refreshing uke ;D

he didn't force Han Xin to stay, like what his father did to his mom. Although he's so worried that they might never meet again, he still let Han Xin leaves him ;-; which in result they meet in a war & he felt betrayed at first. But so glad he understand Han Xin

About 9 months had passed since I read this and I still can't get over this out of my head. So far, this is my top 1 Chinese BL novel. The story is remarkably good with it's strong characters and their witty dialogues, and a love that transcends war and time.
Update: I finished rereading this just now. Again, I missed sleep simply because I can't stop reading. Once again, this story had me giggled and amazed at the witty dialogues. It also gripped my heart to the core making me cry a river re: 41 and last extra.

Reminds me of another Chinese novel, [m]War Prisoner[/m] (at least in the beginning), but much better since the main character isn't weak and has a mind of his own. He's smart, clever, strong, and isn't a damsel in distress. He know's how to think things through and solves his own problems. Life isn't easy for him, but he doesn't spend all day moping about it, but moves forward. I'm just really happy that the uke is actually acting like a man/soldier he proclaims himself to be unlike the many other novels out there, which sometimes feels like male-substitute for a woman.
One issue I had was that the story built-up and foreshadowed his "potentials" many times, but didn't actually showed much of his military strength and strategies in action as I had hoped.
All and all, this is a great read if you're interested reading a mature story about romance and politics.
