Description
From The Pink Panzer:
In the year 2999, only eleven cities still survive on Earth. The climate has changed drastically, and a biochemical apocalypse has made women extinct. For centuries, the male population of Earth has survived by depending on only one woman, called the Holy Mother, whose ova are harvested to create genetically engineered children. By now, any concept of a world in which women exist as ordinary people is long gone. Society has re-structured itself around all-male families, and relationships between men and adolescent boys have become the norm.
At the beginning of Marginal, ... More...

At the beginning of Marginal, the Holy Mother is assassinated by a terrorist known as Grinja. The government in power doesn't want to start a mass panic, so it pretends that the Holy Mother has only shed her vessel, and that she will be miraculously "reborn" in the near future. The public, which is superstitious and devout, believes this easily. Only government officials know that behind the scenes, there is a frantic effort to create a being able to give birth.
The manga's story revolves around Kira, who becomes involved in a three-way relationship with Grinja, the aforementioned terrorist, and Ashijin, a young man who calls himself Kira's owner. A complex plot and flawless world-building make the story irresistible, and Kira's search for freedom is as symbolic as it is gripping. Less...

I absolutely love this manga XD 😀
It's the best BL science fiction thriller story with a charismatic cast and excellent plot twists, that offers reflections on motherhood, the nature of gender roles, the relationship between humanity and the environment and genderfluidity too.
Moto Hagio is the queen of Science fiction manga 😀

The art is really unapealling , at least to me T^T
But I found the plot so creative an captive as well. I'm intrigued by the concept of a world full of men and only a woman exsits as a holy mother for repoductivity. The author explained her theory quite well about how why there was only a "mother" and human was desperately looking for away to bare children to revive the barren world on earth.

Although the art is typically old-fashioned, and everyone has crazily big hair, this manga is definitely worth a read. I stumbled upon this looking for new yaoi, and originally passed it up as it was marked as shounen-ai. However, this does have sex in, as well as rape, although nothing is shown (but if you're in this for the sex, then back out now).
The plot is interesting, if a little confusing to take in all at once in the beginning. You need to read the dialogue boxes to keep up with it, which is something I tend to skim/glaze over at if it becomes too complex. However, Kira's mystery and the whole plot drew me in enough for me to want to do this.
This manga definitely had an interesting concept - what yaoi reader wouldn't love reading about a society completely male, where everyone is expected to be gay? The Iroko/Nenja set up I also found fascinating, especially the way sensei portrays this in the manga, as it is very similar to the ancient greek eromenos and erastes system that used to exist.
The characters, whilst not being anything new, were at least likable and easy to understand. I found the situation of some of the characters very bittersweet, and could emphasize (if not relate, lol) with many of their problems.
In conclusion, this is well worth a read (as others have said) even if it is incomplete. As not very much sci-fy, dystopian type yaoi/shounen-ai exists out there, this is a must-read for any fan of the crossover yaoi-sci-fi genre.

unique, deep, captivating plot, nice art, i absolutely loved it. moto-sensei is a genius, she thought of the marginal universe herself, all the infos and details of this story made sense and i enjoyed reading this different, realistic story. reading the series, i had a very weird feeling cause on one hand, it was so interesting that i wanted to read more, on the other hand, i didn't want the series to end (i had to see the raws to get an idea of what was next since the manga isn't fully translated online...). there was no way to predict the ending and i was really excited and curious to see the guy kira ends up with, but the very ending really let me down... overall, marginal was very, very good but the bitter feeling i felt when i saw the last few scenes (cause i was disappointed with kira's match) spoiled a really well-built story for me...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
on another note, i'll have to point that out: when you have to choose between 2 guys, why would you ever think of choosing the worse one? honest, kind-hearted people that treasure you the most are definetely a better catch, why bother with the obsessive, phycho types?
Wow

I've got to say that I love the plot. It's flawless and captivating, what with the mysterious sci-fi stuff going on and the conspiracies...
And the art is very awesome too!
