Round about loop of cheating/adultery

This is a bit of a lengthy manga with a fair amount of monologues. It took me about half a day to read through it, skimming through boring parts. I really liked the pretense and the starting plot of the story which is why I hoped it would had been something worthwhile. Unfortunately, I was greatly disappointed. There was the round about story focusing on exposing the dirt and philandering ways of a popular celebrity. The celebrity's son, is unfortunately, the same as his father - a bastard bisexual who bounces from one lover to another - one who was easily swayed by pleasure and didn't give a rats about others' feelings (like his girlfriend). Weirdly though, he acts high and mighty as if he was clean and upright, when he was faced with his partner's infidelity. What's worse is the continuing inconsistency of the characters and their personalities. For example...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The mother of the main character (MC), acted like a really money hungry woman at the start. She seemed like she didn't really care about his family and son. The MC though, looks up to his mother for bringing him up. The MC was also noted to have been brought up by a good person according to others. At the end, she seemed like a dignified person, even if she was portrayed to have been selling herself at the start.
The MC was also out of sync with himself or ideal morality, taking kisses from men like it wasn't a big deal, and talking to his girlfriend in a straight face saying he had sex with a man. Also, like on chapter 22, his girlfriend notes that they weren't having sex anymore showing how experienced the MC is in the act. In some scenes though, the MC acts like a virgin and is so against about the idea of it (he shows disgust on the adultery of his male love interest - while he was doing the very same thing).
Even the timing of how things jive is quite poor in this manga. Its like they are living in a very small world. For example in chapter 23, the MC said he wouldn't be gone long, but instead, even had the time to have sex without a care for his promises. They just ran about and seem to be finding people right on time.
When the MC hears that his other love interest was going abroad, he rushes to his side like he's an innocent partner and even makes out again with him at the end.
The MC also barely even went to class in the whole series. His relationship with the girlfriend never even got sorted out. She was portrayed as an idiot who only loves sex.
This also shows how low the main character's values were, even though he was described as a good son and good friend by everyone.

If it wasn't for how poorly the characters were made, I would have probably rated it higher. The ending was also disappointing. It was rushed without adequate support from the plot. The 28 chapters of the manga to me, seemed unnecessary long.
The art was good, even though there weren't any hardcore scenes. Overall, if you feel like you have time to spare, and want to read a failed attempt of a mystery manga, with reversible BL roles and a lot of adultery, then feel free to read it.

It was a great discovery of a new mangaka!

The art is beautifully emotional, the text is building a dynamic story! I just couldn't stop until the end ... and was disappointed with the last chapters.
The artificial many years gap - for growing up of the main character? ...who was developed enough to start with and through the dynamic story. It doesn't match the whole manga written about the boys life. Was really expecting to enjoy a Happy Sunny "Wedding" right after the final culmination & disclosure! Kind of depressing...

The art was nice and clean. The story was a bit too drawn out.

It was interesting to read the mangaka's notes on her 20 year BL career at the end of volume 7. It really shone light on why I wasn't fully satisfied with the series. According to Takaguchi, after the last chapter of Nanahikari (which was published in 2012), she will no longer be writing more BL. 🙁

I hope she will open her eyes to non-typical BL works and see that BL has not become as bland as she thinks it has. Hopefully, she will then return!

This started out strong. I liked the ending even though it seems a little half-baked (author's commentary on her website supports this) because it was mature.

I'm not a fan of explicit sexual scenes anymore, which made me happy about this manga because I could focus on the mystery and intrigue of the seven different "brothers". I will say that I was scared to finish this. BL endings tend towards the worst end. But I enjoyed the mature feeling even though the author's attempt at a deep, comforting love and familial love didn't get across as much as I think she meant.

Art is good. Sometimes it was a bit difficult to differentiate some of the characters. Facial structure were strongly similar; only minor cosmetic differences could help, such as the number of waves a hairstyle had, especially when most of the cast did not have their hair colored in compared to Hikaru.

I agreed with Hikaru's sentiments toward the later chapters. It makes the trip worth it if unsatisfying to many. I believe if I had finished this back when I first began it I would have been very unhappy. Since I am older now and my view had changed, my perspective has also changed and am no longer tolerant of the type of BL I read before. Nanahikari represents a more mature take, even though it was published in a period of time of youthful and childish Adonises/bishounen.

I strongly believe that the mature readers should read this. Not mature as in old enough to see a sex scene, but mature in thinking.

But what about the daughters?

So the story is about the illegitimate sons of a famous actor. They are brought together when the actor dies, and it's a bit of a mystery about who his actual, biological sons are. But from the beginning it is mentioned that there are 8 sons and 50+ daughters. But the daughters are never brought up again. I get that this a BL, so there's not much room for girls. But still, why mention the daughters at all then? And why have the main character make a big deal about getting to meet and know his brothers when he doesn't give two ***** about his sisters?

Beyond that, I liked the overall story. It's unique for a BL. I thought the progression was good at first, but in the end I felt underwhelmed and unfulfilled. Since it is a mystery, I kept reading and reading hoping to find out all the secrets and truths. In the end, the secrets and truths didn't leave much of an impression on me.

And as for the love-triangle, you basically know who the main character is going to end up with. I kind of would've preferred it to go the other way, but I feel like there were problems with both of his choices. And the final scenes didn't do much to make me excited for who he end up with.

If I knew it would END like this...

Well, I must say. I am unhappy with how it ended. If I had known it would end like this, I am not sure I would have read it at all. I have been reading this for a long time, anticipating the end of it. It ended, in my opinion, abruptly. There is no more. I am so disappointed. It came across like 'oh, we need to end it-rush'. They do jump 5 years ahead and it is little confusing, but not much.

<spoiler> the very end, they are talking about the word 'light' and the closing scene you see them kissing' umm so, are we to assume they are just going to forgot the pass 5 years and start fresh. I mean seriously, is he going to be faithful this time. I don't see it. <spoiler>

I think the boys are pretty hot. Takaguchi's art style is very distinctive and very attractive, ever since I laid my eyes on Sakende Yaruze's Koizumi Tenryuu *laugh*.
This series start off very lighthearted, a boy on his teenage bothered by his mother nagging behavior suddenly find himself an inheritance of his never-mentioned-recently-dead father. And on top of it there are lots of mistery-half-brothers to share with.
But it goes heavy with emotion ever since the main character involved in adult romance he can't fully comprehend.
I personally like this kind of story, too bad the conclusion is not very satisfying so I have to give a 8/10.

This has been bugging my mind. What with the way the updates are going... It has taken so long. Can't someone give a spoiler on who Hikaru will end up with? I'm guessing it's the lawyer but then by the way the story progresses I'm thinking the issue with who'll end up with who will be a minor issue and might end up not resolved.

It was starting out great! But then, too many people came in.
If you think about it, half of those people weren't even important.
And it dragged out too long even though it needed to for the will or all that stuff but eventually once you find out who all the brothers were, it gets too wordy.
And what was completely stupid was that the whole point of everything was to share his estate but I havent seen the slightest view of it.
Urrg at this point it got dull for me and started hitting downward, I was just waiting for Hikaru and Shimogura to get together. And by where it's scanlated now, I'm Still waiting 7 volumes.
The art was okay. Although sometimes I was confused who was who.
I like how Hikaru was characterised. Not your typically incredibly naive or suave lead.
I had a problem with how all the focus on Senpai switched to the bearded guy.

In the end, all the co characters decide to go abroad?! Wth
Also, nice one author, why not make everyone into a boy band?

Well, people definitely have different opinions on what's pretty art, that we know. Personally, I found the artwork in Nanahikari simple, clean and easy on the eye. The only problem being that the different characters are too easily mixed up (sadly, this is quite a problem, since the cast is pretty extensive).

I haven't stumbled upon a yaoi manga with this kind of plot before, but still, it contains quite a handful of the typical BL cliches. Nonetheless, it has about the same effect as a soap opera, driving you to read on and see what happens next. In some sequences I enjoyed reading it, and in others I was utterly appalled by the characters. But ultimately, it was entertaining.

But this manga's biggest flaw is it's characters. They're just so extremely flat. I feel utterly NOTHING for the characters, especially the three main leads. They're like empty shells. Nanamura Hikaru (main lead) has no personality and no backbone. His emotions and reactions feel so damn animated and fake. Shimogura Hirone (the attorney) has no backbone either and his sudden love for Nanamura Hikaru really doesn't come across, even when extreme measures are taken in use. Ashinuma Ushio is no exception either.

And what the heck is up with
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Ushio raping Hikaru? You call that rape? And if it's called rape (though I find it silly, since Hikaru was like "oh, okay" and afterwards ".....I JUST GOT RAPED?"), why the HECK don't they deal with it in some way? It's like... "Ah, yeah, I'm sorry 'bout dat, we clear?"... Jeez. Oh Jeez. I can't take it seriously.

I find above-mentioned things annoying, since this series tries to be serious. But it feels like a joke sometimes. It's just so flat! I'm seriously amazed at how flat it is for a 7 volume series. All these flaws taken into consideration, I was actually pretty entertained through these (currently) 6 volumes (I'm embarrassed by this fact). It's completely like a soap opera, it's horrible, but you can't help but read on.
