Collection of one and two chapter stories. Basically in every story, the guy is being used by the girl or vice versa and neither one of them really thinks very much about the others feelings. Characters are super quick to hurt each other. When the chance for a healthy relationship presents itself, the other character usually runs away. Reading this leaves you with an empty feeling on the inside. People keep calling the series realistic, however, I don’t think people are quite this warped in real life. The kids in this manga are super promiscuous and sexually self-destructive. When I was in high school, there were plenty of kids having sex, but there are also plenty of kids not having sex, or only having sex a few times, but not at the level of this manga. If you’re looking for a feel good romance, then don’t dare read this. Also what I hate most about this series, Too many of the stories are left feeling incomplete, or open ended and it’s frustrating.

It's really not. It's story after story about these young scrawny underdeveloped shounen protag-looking boys having sex with women WAY out of their league. Sometimes even stealing them from their 10/10 high-spec older boyfriends.

It's just annoying self-gratification for unpopular losers to self-insert into.

well some reviews on the books

the reviews were saying that the characters and relationships between the different characters in that book were realistic

but it didnt seem realistic to me, it seemed ... well ... rediculous and unrealistic (as entertaining as it could possibly be)

but i was wondering if it might just be me, if girlfriend is actually somewhat realistic and i was just missing something ...

Bettencourt is a fantastic artist and the stories sparkle from her efforts.

Hokazono Masaya on the other hand didn't write his best work here.
The stories are realistic but that's not always a good thing, particularly since in the real world teenagers and young adults are often egomanical psychopaths or crippled by ridiculous insecurities. So we're given a lot of callous, promiscuous slimeballs and pathetic, simpering geldings; just like real high school and college. And who wants to read about that.

i really liked this manga most of the stories characters and situations were really interesting and the art is pretty good. the only problem i have with this is some of the guys views on there situation is so depressing a lot of them should have been happier ideally and a some of the girls were just kinda loose with bad morals but over all this was great.

I also just wanted to state may favorites and least favorites. for my top 3 favorites i would say
(1) act 10. with the perverted girl it was funny and over all good.
(2)act 20 with the bickering child hood friends
(3) act 23. i really enjoyed this overall and i admit i do like the happier endings

I cant say i hated really any story but the worst to me were these two and only because of the heroines involved:
(1) hands Down like every one said Act 7(and on) with the glasses bitch shes a really depressing bitch with and awful attitude
(2) act 9. (and the rest involving her) with the cry baby clumsy little girl that constantly makes a fool of they guy with her messed up wishy-washy attitude. over all these two characters sucked to me cause they were stupid not to appreciate what they got, the guys in there stories were really good an loyal guys.

it IS really realistic, and i liked the fact that some chapters were new characters and some chapters were continuations of the characters that were in another chapter. it was a pleasant surprise every time you started a new chapter~

i actually even grew to like the art, although the duck lips kinda threw me off at first...

anyways, i liked the stories - and what variety!!! it wasn't just your normal guy-girl love, and it expanded upon the different contexts of the word "girlfriend" which was the tying factor of all the stories. it goes to show not everyone fits the mold and that relationships come in all different forms and go in all different directions.

... and it's really erotic, which i liked too~

I think these short stories exemplify what really happens to people who aren't "Main Character" types. Every single guy in this series is seriously flawed in some way or another, they're Nerds, Dorks, Idiot Pretty Boys, Otakus, Losers, Second Bests, etc. They don't have life happen to them like those mighty main characters do, (speaking as a side character) they don't always get the happy ending but usually end up in a fucked up situation where nothing is right. Where the term "Girlfriend" may not be as appropriate for the situation as "That girl I'm sleeping with who I really care about but can't let her know because she doesn't see us like that". I especially relate to the Team captain chapter, seeing as I am now in a happy relationship with the girl i've loved since time began. The downside is that she is the mother of my best friend's son.... Love is complicated, people do love and no it's not always just one person. People cheat, that's reality, it's not like looking away will change that fact. People hurt the people they love the most, though not intentionally. People don't like making hard choices. People are most comfortable around people similar to themselves. Girls are just as erotic as boys, don't let anyone tell you different, they're just a lot pickier about what turns them on. all in all this story was good and the concept behind it all seemed very down to earth as far as relationships go, it's just got a strong erotic sense about it that's rather uncommon.The only bad thing I can say about this whole series, is that twins never act like that. NEVER! so that story was complete bullshit.

I think I should read it again...it has some quite good psychological and philosophical points there. Art is very very amiable. Like I said, Im looking forward to reading it again after some time pass...

Found this manga to be rather disgusting. Might just be me, but I found it pretty insensitive. It's mostly about sex. Raw sex with barely any emotional attachment. "Girlfriend"? That's not how I see it. Then again, lots of relationships start at this stage. You could say the manga is somewhat realistic. It's just not what I like to read. Can't say I recommend.

I really liked the manga...I got hooked up right after reading the first 5 stories...It was hard at first (considering that every chapter had new characters) but I really liked how they put effort to make each chara unique...I got really angry with the Glasses girl and guy but in the end they made the story a bit unique )
