Description
1) The sound of the sea With the sound of the sea in the background, pressed on by the overwhelming literary style, a pure love that is too bitter-sweet.
High school student Shougo lives in a rural port city. The moment he meets the art teacher Asano, who was transferred here from the city... He is ruled by indescribably intense emotions. ...Shougo masturbates while dreaming of violating Asano.
I think the problem with the stories is that they're short. I'm left hoping they were longer because they had depth and potential for more. Personally i like the art, with such masculine characters. The endings as also a mixed of bags, some i found to be ok, but others were bittersweet due to their realistic portrayal.
This collection is hard for me to give an overall rating as the stories varied a lot. The first story was decent. It had a lot going for it, but it wasn't really perfect. The middle stories were just ok really, I doubt I will remember them. The fourth chapter was very good though. I found it really touching and a bit painful. It's also not something I think I've seen covered before and it was handled well.
the sound of the sea starts out well and progresses nicely, but ends very rushed; i would have liked to see more development instead of being presented with a fait accomplit.
moon on the 16th night was very realistic, and i like how the violation was dealt with (also unexpectedly realistic); but it made me sad nonetheless.
shared key is another short about foot-fetish-kun and his lover, which is pretty much a repeat of the last one -- they both don't talk to each other about something and then get grumpy. these guys were amusing in their first short, but have since only bored me.
last kiss is poignant, especially in a genre where those situations usually end very differently. this is my favourite of the lot.
3:00 am is an extra for the first story which doesn't really add anything.
i didn't like the art in this volume much; it felt less detailed than usual, and i didn't find most of the protags attractive, which also took away from the sex scenes. i am downrating it for that in this case, since it has an overall "lazy" feel rather than just a single character design that i don't find appealing.
so, 2.5 good stories out of 5. not their best work.
Some of the stories are pretty good, like the first one and the one about the married men. The rest are typical, and they all try way too hard to be sexy. Nothing "overwhelmingly literary" about this.
I really liked it. The art may or may not be everyones cup of tea but I thought the stories were very realistic and quite moving. What I also liked best about this, and what probably separates it from most yaoi's is that it didn't have any feminine uke's... the stories are alot more like what you'd picture a homosexual relationship to be like as appose to the souly fantasy smut some yaoi can be like... one story in particular reminded me alittle of brokeback mountain.
