Description
From NOIR:
Arisugawa Kiku (aka Arisu) is a Japanese high-school girl who gets really nervous around foreigners. Arisu's father is getting transferred to New York for his job, so her mother pressures her to sign up for conversational English lessons. Arisu reluctantly goes to class only to discover that she's already met Ish, one of her new instructors! The two had fought over the last can of mackerel at the 100 yen shop the day before. Despite being a rude and sarcastic guy, Ish is actually very popular... Why is it that guys with glasses are just so SEXY?!

Pretty dreadful

Like everybody else I had difficulty understanding which parts were Japanese and English. But that's not the main reason I thought it was bad. The story was boring. The main character was dull and emotionless, foreigners don't just kiss people they'd get a slap in the face why do they always think we do that, and the romance was just terrible.
Honestly I don't know why I bothered reading to the end. I thought maybe we'd learn about some interesting back stories behind the characters but alas.

Loved it....until NOIR stole it

Condensation scans, the original scanalators, did a great job distinguishing when the characters were speaking in japanese, english, etc. But then, unfortunately, scanalating group NOIR decided to stea this project and eliminated showing any difference is language, which really ruined this manga. Also, this manga was very obviously rushed, I'm guessing due to low ratings and cancellations, but overall had a great concept, characters, and drawings. A shame it was taken by NOIR and that it was ended so quickly. A good read that I'd suggest to a friend.

Neither spectacular nor generic

I agree that there is a problem not being able to discern which language characters are speaking in. The scanslators did use a code, but I was frequently confused and tempted to conclude that half the time they forgot they were using different fonts. Either way, a lot came down to the context in which the characters were speaking.
About the actual story itself? This is one of those mangas that (I find at least) are vague. This will appeal to some people, but I am more of a "state it explicitly" type person and as such found this to be slightly irritating and difficult to understand. At times the main characters' actions were incomprehensible and just didn't make sense and I couldn't understand the female lead's emotions and feelings.
I have to say I was expecting something a little more like the generic shoujo; this isn't really typical in its execution. The mangaka did a good job of making what could have been utter rubbish into a decent story. Also, I wanted the ending to be a little more satisfying. Although it was only twelve chapters, nothing very visible happened it terms of development between the main leads, so it would have been nice to have a little more at the end, to make their relationship more concrete.
Read it if you find it and like this type of thing, but don't go out looking for it.

Lost In Translation

Looking at some of the other comments here, the biggest failing people seem to be having is a difficulty with discerning what is supposed to be in English and what is supposed to be in Japanese. Having seen the Japanese RAWs for Eikaiwa School Wars, I know that when this manga was published in Japanese that it is very obvious as to what language a character is speaking in. When a character spoke in English, it was written in English with Japanese underneath in smaller letters like subtitles. However if someone speaks in English and Kiku just doesn't understand it at all, it is entirely in English without the subtitles. Naturally when characters speak in Japanese, it is written in Japanese.

The problem with the above is that it does not make it easy for people who are translating this for readers who only speak and read English. However I do appreciate very much that someone did make an effort to scanlate this manga as I do not think there really was going to be an easy way to go about doing it.

and i admire that. =) i really enjoyed the main characters not understanding each other well. the author didn't over do it though to the point where i might have started rolling my eyes every time it was done. altogether, it was a good short read. =)

yeah thats pretty much what i wanted to say or is it??

i dont know if what i want to say is the thing above or it just takes time for a person to warm up to any of Matsumoto- sensei's works..

since i think that almost or all of her mangas have this kind of feeling around it...

i think that the art is refrreshing...

the story is a first... not overly dramatic or cheesy but has its own charm...

that said i think its pretty good to pass time with!!

anyway.... just have to comment at the sometimes sucky translation.. but hell! its alright... the translators are like doing their best... even though maybe its one of the reason the ratings here are kindda low...

the thing is i read this because i was interested in Ish. he seems like the stubborn type of male and i got that right. hoho. the story is ordinary but the two protagonist was really interesting especially their conversations. they might not understand each other really well but there's just something endearing when they are together. anyway, i was really happy with Ish and Kiku, i got no problems with them. however, there is something which still bugging me.. did Kiku go to New York? there are actually a lot of questions unanswered in this manga so it was a bummer and the ending, there's something missing there which i can't pin-point. so i was quite disappointed with it.

Kept getting worse and worse...

I was interested by the description of the series and decided to give the series a try, thinking it would be a quick interesting read. I was very disappointed by it, it was all right when I stared reading but slowly got worse and worse, I had to force myself to finish manga, and I ended up not liking the manga at all.

Plot- Not very original and I felt the twists, while not expected, weren’t carried out well and more details to the back story should have been added.

Characters- I found most of the characters annoying and flat. No one seemed to have any reasons behind their actions. When the end came I found myself not caring at all what happened to the characters, they were so bland. Arisu was annoying! She didn’t care about anything and just went along with things halfheartedly, in the end I doubted whether she truly loved Ish or not, it didn’t really seem like it. Shiro, Ish’s rival, I just didn’t understand. He loved Arisu and then at the end he just… let her go, just like that, his actions didn’t make sense. Ish was a bit better than the other characters but he didn’t stand out to me and some of his reactions… I don’t know they seemed out of place with the situations that were happening. All in all the cast wasn’t a very interesting bunch of characters.

Art- Lacking, that’s what I’d call it. No it wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t good either, the art style used I didn’t like, it seemed half finished. The paneling wasn’t that great either, it was to blocky with a lot of white space at times as if to just fill up the page and the way it was laid out didn’t capture my attention. The transitions from scene to scene were choppy and confusing most of the time. And the time line of the story was also hard to follow.

Other- I got bored about half way through and got tired of trying to understand the plot, a lot of scenes seemed out of place and some of what was said didn’t really make sense with what had happened before, it was very confusing. Part of this confusion can be credited to the scanelators who didn’t distinguish between what was being said in English and what was being spoken in Japanese leaving it to the reader to try and decipher what was being said in which language. The confusion was also caused by the paneling and just the story telling. All in all I didn’t enjoy this manga; there were no redeeming points in it for me. Even Arisu and Ish’s relationship which was sort of sweet at first became annoying when Arisu didn’t seem to care one way or another who she was with and didn’t seem to have any special feelings for Ish at all. The story failed to keep me even slightly interested and I don’t recommend this manga.

2/10 -Disliked it

i like it for the most part - but like mentioned before i didn't understand half of the time, maybe it was the scanlation but i couldn't tell if they were speaking in english or japanese. i thought they were going to use different fonts but towards the middle - end everything is in the same font! so confusing! i still like it, heh i find dry humor hilarious ish x kiko all the way although the ending is a bit meh! i'm satisfied but not at the same time.
