The number 1 complain about this series I think is the depiction of the main character : "idiotic", "short sleazy pervert", "pathetic", "chubby orr fat ", "midget alien creep ", "ugly", "retards", "unattractive both Physically and in his personality"
_ "idiotic", "retards", ""pathetic" : Sorry to say this but I think you need to redefines what those words mean because I don't see how it fits Kaoru. He exceled in academics and fitness back when they were kids, but he was lost in finding a purpose for his life and fell short. He feels inferior to everyone. He loses his self-esteem. He acts like a thug to stay away from the people who he thinks are too good for a useless bum like him. I doubt "idiotic" and "retards" can be used on a rational being that can deceive people skillfully like him. I also don't think they can describe the psychological problems of human beings either. Do you call people with ADD, inferiority/superiority complex, or DID retards or idiotic?

"Pathetic", "short sleazy pervert", Pathetic? Are you sure you are not talking about his family situation because I think it should be the case. He lost his father. His family is dirt poor. He was not blessed with virtues like aspiration or bravery or wit. Is his life pathetic? I say yes. Is his personality pathetic? I don't think so. He strives to better himself. He hones his skills. He has a kind heart. If any of these characters are considered pathetic, I guess even Mother Teresa would not be considered a virtuous person either. "Short sleazy pervert"? Do you have a grudge against short people? Sleazy pervert? Are you sure you are using the right words to describe a young man that cries as he hurts his beloved despite their mutual consents? And are you sure you are not pervert yourself by thinking of getting into a sexual relationship with women/men while all Kaoru has done is relieving Nana's stress? Their S&M are even more pure than normal relationship I would say. They expose everything to each other: both the ugly selfish sexual desires and platonic care for others. On the other hand, a platonic and pure relationship we usually see in movie or other manga ultimately lead to visible or invisible sexual relationship (Otherwise, there would be no babies). If both S&M and normal relationship involves sexual theme, there is no way for one to distinguish if one type is better than the other. It is simply a logical contradiction when one judge S&M as pervert and the other type as goodness.

I personally have enjoyed this work very much having read through it multiple times as well as the Black Label Edition. I am just wondering if they will ever make a English Paperback Edition since it is already in German and Japanese. Plus i was also wondering where the author got his ideas for Sarashina Sensei and his ideas. Great read and looking forward for more releases.

Works for Me!

I've loved this series all the way up to where I am now (ch. 103). A proud blurb on each volume being put out at this stage says "1.5 million copies sold!"

Why??!

1. Its story presents the fundamental shoenen trope of the inarticulate, socially inept, totally sexually shamed and repressed kid pursuing with endless clumsiness the hot girl in his class....

2. Interlaced with a comprehensive introduction to the titillating subject of S&M!

3. By this means NtK offers us a very standard manga experience: a chaste boy-girl relationship with a substantial addition of transgressive sensual behavior and feelings to keep us interested when the story flags. Often in shoenen manga the transgressive element is incest desires, but that's getting old, and this is an entirely new replacement for it!

4. Nana is so lovingly drawn that she comes across as very hot!

5. Dorky Kaoru is the perfect stand-in for the inexperienced young male reader, yet he shows traits that such a reader would like to believe he would display if he were so very lucky as to find himself in K's situation: willingness to take chances, willingness to work hard to improve himself, and complete, unselfish devotion to his loved one.

6. Acceptable power relationship between the MCs makes the story salable to girls. In the social world of the story, K is so far below Nana that he dare not even talk to her in public, but in the breathers he's totally in charge. If ugly Koaru were good-looking, he would have ALL the power in the relationship, which I think would turn off or even frighten lots of girls to the point where they'd never become readers.

Thank goodness for manga, and thanks to the scanlators of NtK. We in the USA will never see anything like this published there, I think.

Unromantically the SM gears keep grinding
Rating: 4.0 / 10.0
by residentgrigo

Nana to Kaoru is utterly lame and one dimensional as it features 20+ volumes without actual sex, romance or even proper SM. The endless teasing after the over the top pilot even managed to burn out some of the scanlators and the series is pretty much a hard PG-13 by European standards. The manga´s popularity obviously comes from the female lead Nana who is a submissive and a convenient Mary Sue next door and the professional art so the manga will probably last to volume 30 without changing in any significant way. My main problems are these:
Why do they have to keep their "relationship" secret? Why is this sexploitative seinen manga set in a high-school? Could Kaoru be more boring? How comes that all the sex professionals are the friendliest people possible?
How come that the teens are allowed to work in public sex shops? There are no Shades of Grey on any of the characters due to that. Pun intended and that abortion at least managed to be filled to the brim with sex.
Where are the spin-offs coming from? Milking is lame and what is the rest of Kaoru´s harem doing here besides representing (multiple) fetishes? Isn´t this supposed to be a childhood sweethearts romance...
The series is overall more readable than most sex manga, whatever that means, but it is just too boring and pointless to recommend so watch Nymphomaniac and Secretary (2002) instead. These actuality feature developed relationships, Sex/SM and most of all award-wining acting. I am not a prude you see. I just don´t like to waste my time and you shouldn´t either. The way more erotically charged Natsu no Zenjitsu (9/10) and the actually pornographic Sensei o Mite Kudasai (7,5/10) both got a positive review from me so read them or the Eisner winning Sex Criminals (8,5/10) from Image. Don´t settle for less!
Update: I was dumb enough to flip through recent volumes and even Kaoru´s teacher has joined (a separate) bang bus to add another fetish. I am not able to call the series tame anymore due to the endless graphic sex and blowjobs thanks to that arc and the main gang now also partakes in public sex shows while still keeping the swimsuits on. Any more would ruin the Mary Sue factors a guess? Goodbye Ryuta-san as we will never meet again, regardless of how many identical pr0n manga you will start, as all your previous nonsense managed to burn me out.

BS on the MC being lame and the girl being tsundere, since that isn't the case AT ALL. MC is pretty normal and the girl gives off zero tsundere vibes except maybe once in the beginning.
You are right about it being super slow though. It feels like an active effort is being made to develop the characters and their relationships as slowly as possible

It's different theme i'll gave the series that, but the rest is the same as other echi harem series. the same lame male protagonist, the same tsundere childhood friend female character, the same judgmental classmate. Good impression at the start but the development is so slow it's just like story for two hours movie adapted to 13 episodes of 1 hour long mini series. i read it till volume 5 and get bored

Atleast the art is good.

Astonishing

This manga simply should not work.
The male lead is designed to be unattractive both Physically and in his personality.
The female lead is his childhood friend. She is meant to be his romantic interest, but is designed to be utterly unapproachable for him.
The central theme of the manga is a serious take on S&M, outside of a Hentai, and is the only thing that brings the characters together. While an Ecchi manga, it deals with the subject with next to no nudity; let alone sex.
It is episodic, most storylines depicting the events around one of their 'breathers', which is their name for their S&M sessions.

Amazume takes all of that and makes it work brilliantly. The art is good, typical of the author, but what makes it work are the characters. Both of the leads are fleshed out realistically, both are shown to be flawed. both are trying improve themselves. Each story arc moves their relationship on a little bit more. The supporting cast all add to the depth.

The story IS slow, and the theme puts a lot off (I had no interest in S&M when I started reading this; still don't), but it really is a must read.

Oh and unlike the previous reviewer, I think the pair are slowly spiraling towards each other, and they inevitably will end up together.

Kaoru's pinning
Rating: N/A
by Verito.S

I actually like a lot this manga because of the pinning, the not so background romance between Nana and Kaoru, and specially how Kaoru is in love with Nana and he tries his best to become a better person worthy of her, even when he sees himself unworthy of her, from his looks to his grades, and even when he could totally do something to Nana (not really consensual stuff, which happens on smut shoujo manga often enough, and they fall in love because the guy is hot and beautiful). Kaoru actually loves Nana, he doesn't betray her trust on him.

BDSM doesn't even have to be of your like (I don't love it either), and it's nothing like that 50 shades book. btw.

The sad part is, though, that I don't really see this manga ending with Kaoru and Nana being a couple, and that breaks my heart.

I'm not very new to manga in general, but I became interested in it just at the start of last year. Since then, I've read quite a few, and I have to say this was actually one of the first I read.
After seeing a few of the comments talking about how 'ugly' Kaoru is, I just HAD to make an account and post my opinion. First, I like the fact that the main isnt such a perfect person, and actually makes an effort to grow through the manga. I'm not a person who judges a book by its cover, so to me, the personality of the character is everything. Unlike some other manga, Kaoru isnt exactly a wimpy fag and he actually pushes and exerts himself, and I think that is worthy of respect.

I have to say, the part which touched me most was when Kaoru engages in a short bout of self pity before picking himself up and training his stamina. At least he tries.

In short, read it, and may you find the motivation to push yourself as Kaoru does.

Good set up, very repititous...

The overall set up of the story is great, but that's about it. Sadly it gets pretty repetitious after a while and overall the story is going nowhere. They just add a new toy or an outfit and call it a new arc. The guy acts retarded, like a grade school kid. He has feelings for nana but he has no intentions of ever telling her and about the only thing he can say to her is "shut-up" like an elementary school kid. There is just no ryme or reason for the way he acts. He's brave enough to engage in their "little breathers" but yet he doesn't have to guts to express his real true feelings. I still skim the new chapters once in a while, but unless something new happens, I'm just not interested anymore. If I were about 13, I wold probably love this, but being an adult, I just find it boring.

16+ volumes and there has still been no developement or progess in their relationship. i wonder how long this can go on bevore readers get bored.
