Description
At the beginning of the Edo period (1603-1868), when people enjoyed a time of peace, Lord Tokugawa Tadanaga decides to hold a fighting tournament. In the past, matches were fought with wooden swords, but this time real swords will be used. The one-armed Fujiki Gennosuke and the blind Irako Seigen will fight each other in this tournament, even though both of them are disciples of Iwamoto Kogan — known as Japan's greatest swordsman. So begins the story of intertwining fates, conflict, and strange destinies.

Gonna be honest, near the chapter 35 ish area, my brain could not comprehend what was going on, the art is good, but story is somewhat all over the place

I have one sentence to describe every manga by Yamaguchi Takayuki; No matter how many naked chicks & tits he puts into a work, he always finds to make it homoerotic. There are no exceptions.

Anyway, this would make an interesting live action movie. My favorite part is when Mie's dad finally died.

Series were so good in the begining, pretty interesting in the middle, kinda ok in last chapters, but the ending ruined all positive emotions from reading it. So I think all that great time I had while reading first 40-50 chapter is wasted.
Pick this up if you like swords, human bodies, violence and totally lame ending.

I really have no words for this master-piece.
The only thing I can utter right now is that it felt like I was reading "Hamlet" in a world, culture and principles different than those of the original.

it was decent up till the end, all the volumes up to the end were pretty dramatic, then the final battle ended so fast, that it made everything before seem like someone telling the story adding flare to make it interesting, then the end hits you with how it actually happened, which would be fast, boring and no unnecessary drama, and as for the final actions of that girl, due to the circumstances he had to do what he did or he would have been killed on the spot, so i think shes a cold heated bitch. I give it a 4, for being dramatically boring

War is hell...and so is being a samurai

Love the art, of course.

Story is pretty good too. If I had read it slowly as it was written I would have complained about the pacing as well. Since I read it all in one go, it seemed about right. Not sure what happened to the intersexed samurai girl and toad boy. They got introduced and then sort of forgotten. But Seigen is totally cool. Great tragic hero. Both his flaws and his virtues are supersized!

Entertaining manga: excellent art; really interesting story and characters. Some really intense scenes that keep you starving for more.

My only problem is the pacing. It takes forever for something to happen in this manga. Just when you think some plot development is going to happen, it veers off in a completely different direction. Now the side stories are all very entertaining and usually pretty important to the plot, but it does get pretty annoying when you just want to find out what happens next.

I also feel that the gore is usually just there for shock value. Now, I have no problems with gore, it's actually amazingly well drawn actually (I've never seen evisceration and dismemberment depicted so accurately!)--it's just used inappropriately at times.

got to say, this is without doubt one of the best things i have ever read. and that is despite the gore, because while i do not like gore, saw 3 being the only movie i have ever walked out on, it fits this story perfectly, and actually serves a purpose in telling the story, as opposed to other shit out there which has gore just for the sake of it, as this is a serious, brutal and dirty story about a serious and brutal part of society

good > high-class art + good story + historic value + serious
bad > slow story at times
overall > among millions of manga titles ... Shigurui surely stands out

thanx kotonoha for starting it, spore & notspore & AnonymousStem (r they the same?) for reviving it

I love this manga, and all it entales Samurai have been depicted to lightly in past series such as Rouroni Kenshin, Samurai Deeper Kyo etc. This series is the most realistic Samurai series out there! It's a great read, and probably the closest thing to what it was like to be a Samurai in fuedal Japan.
