Description
From Airship:
Takasu Ryuuji might look like a thug, but he’s actually a nice guy. Making friends when you’ve got an unintentionally scary face is tough–and don’t even get him started on girlfriends. But with his secret crush in his class, the start of his second year of high school is off to a good start. Until he crosses paths with Aisaka Taiga. Beautiful, frightening, and not quite five feet tall, the girl known as the Palmtop Tiger is the one person in school even scarier than Ryuuji himself–and he’s just made the mistake of making her very, very angry.

A great let down

I really, really liked this one, UNTIL
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Ryuuji turned his back against Minori. Seriously, all his feelings for Minori vanished like thin air, consumed by mother earth, without leaving any traces behind. If he really fell for Taiiga along the way of the story, then his feeling for Minori in the first place was weak, fragile, then it was nothing worth displayed. After all, he didn't hesitate AT ALL to choose Taiga over Minori (/me throws chair out of window). To make things worst, Minori was set to had feeling for this bastard of a male lead. My feeling for this one vanished into thin air. I will always dislike this very much, along with "Tora" and "Dora".

Rubbish

Other than Taiga and Ryuuji everyone else is barely developed. The romance is utter trash and when you actually think about it: (the plot summary, you can read if you want to brace yourself for the stupidity that will ensue)
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Taiga just stole away Ryuuji from Minori. Minori being the sacrificing, kind girl wants the best for her best friend... ugh, give me a break. If the situation was reversed, the same thing wouldn't happen. Plus since Yusaku liked the President , Taiga's first choice was officially gone and she went for the backup Ryuuji. And Ami doesn't figure at all because she was just the unused third wheel.

That is ToraDora in a nutshell. Overhyped bunch of trash which leaves a bad aftertaste.

The only romance series I ever REALLY liked.

I'm not much into romantic manga, I have already tried to read a lot of them, but the absolute majority was either uninteresting or pissed me off. The only romance series I have ever read and really enjoyed from beginning to end is Toradora. And not just simply enjoyed, I absolutely LOVED this series!

The characters are awesome, the progression is never boring, and the development of Ryuji's and Taiga's relation is very interesting. The feeling I have about the main couple is that it's not just a meaningless romance, like with "blushing faces here and there", but that there's really love between those two.

I personally recomend you to either read the novel (best option, and it's already completely translated in baka-tsuki) or watch the anime (pretty good too). The manga has a pretty weak graphical level, even though the story is as good as with the others.

I liked it

I read the Japense release of Tora Dora and liked it; but I must say that this translation is pretty freaking outstanding, too. So *YAY* for that.

Also, like so many other reviewers have said here, Tora Dora is nothing new and pretty cliched, but I thinks it's great nonetheless.

Give it a try at the very least smile And I must also commend onizuka's description of this release as well. It's actually quite dead-on.

Great read

You won't find anything especially new or earth-shattering here, but what you will find is a very enjoyable romantic comedy novel series with wonderful characters. My thought's pretty much echo gan17's excellent review below.

I am a little concerned about the length, though. I just finished Baka-Tsuki's translation of volume 6 and then end of that volume contained what I think will be the major turning-point in the story. I don't want to go into any specifics here, but I do want to mention that I hope this series is wrapped up soon. It is listed as 9 volumes and ongoing, but I don't see how it can go on for much longer than that without really starting to be dragged out. I may revise my rating after I read further, but I have really enjoyed what I've read so far.

Note: I have also been following the anime and while it is a bit compressed at times it stays very true to the source material. It is worth the attention of anyone who is a fan of this series.

Cliche... but still pretty enjoyable.

I don't usually read this kind of stuff coz my tastes are more 'seinen', but some friends who live in Japan told me to try ToraDora, and so far, I've enjoyed it quite a bit.

The story isn't unique, and I'm sure it's been done before.... But the 2 main characters are top-notch. By volume 2, you clearly feel the fondness they have for each other, and the bond they create between themselves is so endearing. Even in real life, many people find it difficult to find someone whom they can show their 'true self' without hesitation, yet these two have taken it to the next level. It's not really shoved in the reader's face, but gradually, through the excellent narration of the protagonist's thought process, and always with the utmost subtlety.

My only reservation is how long the author is gonna drag this. I've only read what's been translated by Baka-Tsuki (who do a superb job) but it seems like everything can be resolved within 3 or 4 volumes, but so far, 7 have been released with no end in sight. The main characters seem to keep telling themselves that they like someone else, even though they clearly feel most comfortable with each other.

I'll give it a 'recommended' rating for now, and eagerly look forward the next chapter.

Thanks to baka-tsuki, i can read this novel series which is really funny & cute. after read the novel, the manga version just gives you a little bit more visuality (consider the manga with full of more handsome ryuuji and cuter aisaka... yes that visuality.)

seriously onizuka, that's a nice description! smile :clap clap: "he is like a kyon but who can cook."

If you can ignore the ridiculous set-up volumes 1 - 3 (yea that's a fair chunk, but if you like the generic "light romcom" then it's very bearable to say the least.) , the story is top-notch. The female characters carefully developed (though the male counterparts are found to be a bit lacking)

The story uses a more serious tone in volumes 4 & 5. And I've enjoyed them profoundly.

love tsundere!

And evidently so does yuyuko, she seems to like the school life theme.

Hopefully the manga & anime will be just as good as the novel.

Ryuji is a domesticated dragon, but doesn't mean the palmtop tiger will abuse him like Louise from Z.N.T! no, he's like a Kyon, but who can cook.
which is a good thing, since the tiger is bad at it. smile

in all its looks like it'll shape up to be a great relationship, although slightly cliche in theme we have seen all over the place, a stronger male lead is always better then one where the tsundere get's everything her way.

Thanks to all who read this on Baka-Tsuki!
