Tohru Honda, an orphaned high-school girl, is taken in by the wealthy Shigure Sohma when he realizes she has nowhere else to go. However, the Sohma family shares a secret, and it isn't long before Tohru discovers that there's a reason why her classmates, Yuki and Kyo Sohma, never let girls get near them, and never talk about their lives before they lived with Shigure. And before she knows it, Tohru has become so tangled up in the lives of each member of the Sohma family that she couldn't leave even if she wanted to.

As she learns more and more about the truth of the Sohma family and the nature of their secrets, she desperately searches for a way that she can save them. But what can one girl do, especially when it seems that she may have been part of someone's plan all along . . .

Fruits Basket received the 2001 Kodansha Manga Award in the shoujo manga category and the "Best Manga" award at the 2007 American Anime Awards.

It's one of the first shoujo manga I've read, and I must say I'm quite surprised. It's GOOD. Much better than I expected. Maybe not really a masterpiece, but still a solid piece of entertainment. The characters are well thought out, and most of all, interesting. Almost all of the characters holding important roles in the story are well developed, and even if some aren't exactly likeable, they still have their reasons and motives(though Akito and Shigure could use some more character developement).
Now, if you get bored in the beginning, don't abandon this series. Even though I feel it's pretty solid from the start, it goes at quite slow pace at first. But well, that changes later and in the latter third the manga starts moving faster in more serious direction. But when the drama comes, it's not out of place. It's nicely suggested from the start, just in the beginning the focus lies elsewhere. And when it gets serious, that's when it gets really good.
Oh, and if you don't like too much BL in your manga, don't worry. It is there, but most of it isn't really treated seriously. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
All in all, a very solid manga. Maybe it didn't make me cry, but well, there were very few series that managed that. Definitely worth checking out, even if you didn't read shoujo before.

If you're looking for a manga with romance, drama and comedy, this is the perfect choice. I've read this 3 times already but it never failed to make me cry everytime I read it.

The first volumes focus on introducing the characters, and as you continue to read to the end, it's where the drama and romance unfold. The ending is perfect too - I wish I could've seen more about what happened.

Best shoujo manga ever.

Personally disliked it. Too much of a sausage-fest with plenty of homosexual reference. But hey, if you're into that, along with plenty of drama, you're sure to enjoy Fruits Basket.

edit: Example of what I'm talking about, is for instance when the one guy proves his hair is "naturally white". Ahem...Yeah...about that...

This is a hard series for me to I'm not going to give it a number score. The first half of the manga I ABSOLUTELY ADORED! It was hillarious, upbeat, and fun. Definitely worth reading. The second half, however, took the whole series into a new direction, and I couldn't stand it. The characters and plot suddenly became filled with tragedy and angst. And the sweet little love triangles I adored so much earlier were completely destroyed. I wish I'd stopped reading right at the middle.

How can I describe the best manga ever righted in the world?!
Is my favourite manga without doubt, because is a love story that makes you feel that you want that too...
They really loved untill the end, I just didn't like she allways crying -.-' but I was happy to see that everyone had a happy end, and that the "God" had peace too ^_^

Sadlly the anime is not good enought to say that is at the same leavel as the manga, but was good to, even knowing that the anime "runned away" from the original plot -.-'

Well... but is the best manga ever edited, it maked me cry in allmost all the chapters, but more in the last ones (and I'm saying this because I'm not the type of person that cries for everything so don't get the wrong idea -.-' ).
One last thing... the last three pages were the perfect ones, I couldn't choose a best final than that ^_^

this series can be pretty hardcore at times..
Like all the secrets and lies tied around the Sohmas, and the hurt, too.
But you can't have a successful reality with just happy scenes.

Fruits basket is a perfect blend of drama and comedy although it does get a bit darker towards the end, but that's expected because we're getting closer to the crux of the problem. But it does an amazing job at making you think that it is just a cute comedy but somehow every once in a while it'll sneak in subtly something that is quite emotional. And as you keep on reading you realize that their is so much more to the story then you initially expected.

The characters all start out as very stereotypical characters (well as stereotyped as you can get in a supernatural-comedy mix) but develop into characters that are very deep and endearing. The manga is beautifully drawn (and I love the cuteness of some of the drawings such as those little icon characters that pop up in those speach bubbles to identify whose speaking (like the onigiri), or how sometimes to add to the comedic (or cute) effect the ears revert to like animal form. XD)

If you want a manga that you can fall in love with, read this. Tohru, the main character, is so cute and nice and her relationship with Kyou is so addictive!! Almost all of the characters has a good sense of humor! Ayame is my favorite comedian!!! And I can't get over kyo!!!

The art is pretty good! It's very amazing. The characters' faces becomes more older, good-looking at a later chapter. Especially momiji!!

The ending's perfect and everyone had a happy ending.
Fruits Basket also made me cry once. The one with the story of Tohru's parents. And of course made me lauch a lo~t of times!!!
