While bicycling to school her first day as a high school student, Renge Ohyama meets a weird girl who on closer inspection appears to be a life-sized doll--not an advanced robotic creation or even a magical doll. Rather, a scary looking middle aged man controls her movements, puppet-like, and speaks for her via ventriloquism. Unfortunately, this perverted-seeming old man and his doll happen to attend her new school. Even worse, is in the same class and sits right behind her. And it seems the doll wants to be friends?!

Weird and normal at the same time

This one is ridiculously funny. Make sure you understand the literal meaning of "ridiculous" and not the normally (and incorrectly) used version. In other words, if you take the whole "Sumire is a puppet" thing out of the equation, the rest of the manga is actually quite normal humor... normal and incredibly hilarious.

Of course, you can't take the whole puppet thing out and thus, it's ridiculously funny. I laughed out loud more times reading this manga than most other comedy mangas. I wouldn't stick it in any top ten lists but seriously...

Ridiculously funny.

(Did I use that line enough times? Would you prefer absurdly? Preposterously? They all work.)

Gets a 10 for pure originality. And because it deserves at least one 10.

It's really refreshing to find a school-life comedy manga that isn't tainted by silly romance or pointless ecchi, and Sumire 16 Sai!! is definitely one of those rare gems.
The protagonist has one of the most original characters designs I have come across in a shounen manga to date, and his / her presence makes anything that would normally have been an average, slightly amusing situation, incredibly hilarious.

There are even some surprisingly touching moments in the story, and it was rather heartwarming to see how Sumire wins over the select few people who have the good sense to see him for his true worth without been wrapped up in thoughts of his odd hobby. A line from the one of the characters says it all; "People and places all change so fast, but in this city there is one person who will never change. And I think those few who're in the know are very fortunate"

I experienced a brief moment of alarm when
Spoiler (highlight to view)
the female ventriloquist and her puppet made an appearance, fearing that the mangaka would be tempted to take the easy way out and turn this story into a yet another romantic comedy. Thankfully, I was soon proven wrong. While it is quite obvious that Sumire and Sakura are kindred spirits, it is equally obvious that they have no romantic feelings towards each other.

The two last chapters were particularly well-done; Nagayoshi Takeru made the right choice in abandoning his usual brand of silly humour for the sake of a simple, bitter-sweet conclusion.

A word of warning to potential readers; this is most definitely a shounen manga. It is by no means realistic, and childish optimism is a predominant theme throughout. Those who cannot bear to see forever-positive-and-cheerful characters would do well to steer clear. However, if all you are looking for is a good laugh, Sumire 16 Sai!! is a choice you won't regret.

The Life of a fictional character

A really funny comedy about friendship and a middle age man's full sized puppet. This story is completely focused on humour and friendship and being nice in general. It reminds me of High School Girls but even less about romance. The art's not trying to be moe.

The only minor negative is that there isn't any real backstory as to why a man is being the character of sumire beside it being some plan to help kids make friends. At first I thought there might be some backstory like his child died and never got to live fully.

Sumire is like an actual fictional character, and the people in the story and the audience will get to like her. Which adds a bit of a bittersweet aspect to the ending. Sumire is stuck playing that role, and the fact that's bittersweet despite all the jokes being about her being a doll is amazing.

Ok I have to admit that I was very skeptical to this in the start, it just sounded to wierd. And yeah, it's wierd, it's absurd even most of the time. But I just read all of the translated 26 chapters just now, and I can safely say this. Damn, but this has to be one of the most unique, strange, wierd, original and funniest mangas I've read, ever.

On the surface it's just an ordinary cutish highschool comedy, but with the old man and his doll added to the mix, it makes for some of the best comedy I've read in a long long time. The fact that the old man and the doll, just makes about every situation (that othervise wouldent have been funny in that setting) so damn absurd is hilarious.

Im loving it so far, I havent laughed so hard at anything for ages. Dont miss this, whatever you do!

Honestly, Angel Densetsu is the funniest manga I have ever read so when I read a comment that this was funnier, I had to read it. Did not disappoint!! On par with A.D. in terms of comedy! I will definitely re-read this many times ... Sumire is just plain awesome!

Missing you oldman

I found this manga just by luck, and I was really lucky I have to say.
The ending it's perfect, is one of those endings that don't answer your questions, but give you another one.
The story is an interesting way to see classic school life mangas, but the idea of have a puppet as a MC (with the "oldman") even more, one that teach the human to be better.
Sadly the backstory and the motives of the oldman are going to be a mystery for a long time, more if we take the omen on count.
I´m going to give it a 10 starting just for the manly tears at the end.
