The series follows a young girl named Rakka, a newly arrived haibane (an angelic-looking being), and other characters in the city of Glie (guri), a walled city with one entrance where no one is allowed to leave.
Also contains a side story written after the end of the anime. It shows the relation between Reki and Nemu (and Hyouko) after the departure of Kuramori. The colour illustrations are those supposedly by Reki. One is a scenery in her dream and the other is the portrait of Kuramori.

As always, I think the manga could have imparted so much more than the anime did - not that that takes anything away from one of the more beautiful stories out there. One wonders if ABe-san could have his arm twisted into revisiting Old Home one day. On another point, has anybody else come across a very strange little manga that has a cross-over between Haibane and Lain (also Yoshitoshi ABe of course). It's untranslated, so I have no idea what's actually going on, and I'm not 100% sure that the artwork is ABe's.
