Watch because the ova's drawing is good

Found the ova first and when I watch it it was looking fine, the story is not bad and the plot is understandable but it is so different when we are talking about the manga. Like the users before I will say exactly the same thing the manga is too confusing even the drawing is not clear, the characters are not explained clearly and the ending is blur, the mangaka's idea of the manga is too unclear.

Explanation of what happened in the end

Spoiler
In last chapter Matsui was shot twice. Then he was in a coma for long time. And in last pages Yuuji's voice finally has reached his mind, and Matsui started to regain consciousness.
On last pages of manga there's text - Matsui's thoughts, so readers can see what's inside his mind - he sees a fish tank from inside. Matsui is in a coma and he can't wake up. He's the main character of this manga, and it's named after him, or rather his state near the end of manga.
And then he wakes up, though manga ends before it was shown.

Also in first versions of scanlation, some pages were mixed and some were missing. But now there's available for online reading normal version with all pages in correct order.
It's a psychological angsty manga, which was typical for yaoi genre in 90's. And it's quite good, if you read it in correct order.

Don't read

I have no idea how this ever got published much less reached chapter 20. To say it was confusing is an understatement. The mangaka throws all these characters in but never explains who they are and the ones she at least attempted to develop came off confusing messes. Like, the Kata character:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
: In the beginning, he is good friends with Yuuji. He even had a role in setting up Matsui's attack and rape (well, the first one). Yet, once Yuuji stops hanging out, he goes all berserk and attacks him with a knife. His guy friend who loves him stops him before any harm is done though. Forward a couple years and he is a guy who goes sexing up every guy, talking about SVC's and just complaining about how Yuuji doesn't share his feelings. This continues until he decides to break Matsui by feeding him some drug and doing the same to himself, hoping to commit suicide. Again, the guy friend who still loves him steps in and goes "don't die." And then he is magically saved and he admits: "Apparently I didn't love Yuuji, it was just a misunderstanding of feelings."
.

Like, seriously, WTH? The other main characters are more or less just as confusing and never explain themselves, or their motivations.I don't think the scanlators are to blame though. The panel transition is almost nonexistant, the chapters don't connect, tons of new characters get introduced but usually have no relevance and disappear as quick as they entered, and there is no explanations or emotional depth to any of these characters.

Sad to say, there isn't one good thing I can say about this manga. I've read been reading manga for over 10 years but I can usually find something good to say about them, something that makes the story has a purpose. So I can just say "just not my cup of tea, but I'm sure someone else might like it" but this story is impossible to follow so it is hard to imagine anyone could like it. First time in my life I've given a 1.0 rating.

Confusing...

After rewatching the anime OVA, after so many years, I decided maybe I should check out the manga just to see where the relationship lead. Like mentioned by previous peeps, the OVA isn't bad. It has the 90s animation, music and character nostalgia. It was pretty... but the story itself lacked any development (makes sense though since it's only 30 minute) hence why I decided to finally check out the manga. In the OVA, you had Matsui the innocent high school uke with a lonely past, Yuuji the brooding heir to a corporation seme, Yoshino the uke's best friend (it never really reveals in the anime he has any romantic feelings for Matsui blatantly....it's hinted though I suppose), and Yuuji's gay gang of friends (with one of them being in love with Yuuji and another who's in love with the friend who's in love with Yuuji and it's hinted the remaining two friends are paired up). The relationship went something like this: Kata friend <--->Kata --> Yuuji <---> Matsui <----Yoshino....so a love pentagon in the OVA?

Onto the manga...like everyone else mentioned, it's a bit confusing. It starts off where the OVA left off and more or less progresses fine. Onto volume two, the story all suddenly introduces a bunch of new characters out of nowhere without much development or why they're even there (you could only speculate....for example the detective character? or at least I assumed he was? there was a young president also....I have no idea what president he's of...I'm assuming president of the high school? then there's the girl following the antagonist that works for Yuuji's family). The love relationship then turns into either a hepta or octa love relationship. I suppose the story was consistent in the fact that all the characters in a sense felt like they were like fish in a trap, the whole hopeless theme (similar to Zetsuai...in a sense).

The ending also is a bit confusing like mentioned by someone....
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
You have a bunch of characters questioning Yuuji whether he loved Matsui. In some cases it makes it seem like Matsui was shot by the corporate guy trying to protect Yuuji by having destroying Yuuji's relationship and make sure he focuses on the company. It never clearly shows whether Matsui was shot or if it was someone else [it almost liked Yuuji was shot too]. Then you get to the last few panels, another character telling Yuuji that if he loves Matsui, he should keep trying to win him over....so it makes it seem like Matsui alive and have lost some of his memory [maybe due to trauma or the drugs he was injected with the corporate antagonist was threatening him with]....since Matsui in the last panel I can only assume he's alive and more or less Yuuji has to go through the process of seducing Matsui again. At least one character has a somewhat happy ending and that's Kata and his lover.

In the end, I wouldn't really recommend the manga. It's too confusing and all over the place (unless you're into trying to piece the puzzle together and speculate). Some characters kind of drop out all suddenly. I was kind of blank with all the characters. I wasn't really rooting for anyone in the story.

I really agree with Pretzel-Heart
For the fact that this manga was made into the animation and it also run for the whole 3 volumes, I really believe the manga can't be this confusing and terrible. There is no way the publisher or the anime creator would make it if the manga is that bad
Therefore, the only reason I could think of is also the scanlation part. There must be something wrong with the scan. I don't wanna blame them because the scanlation group are kind enough to scan and translated this manga for us. Nut I really can't think of no other reason.

Therefore, I suggest you to watch the anime as an alternative
Though not a super great anime, it sure is beautiful in some way, even if it was made almost 2 decades ago. Definitely worth trying smile

Scanlating Shame...
by Pretzel-Heart

To be honest, I'm not really sure what went wrong with this manga. I saw the OVA (which, despite others' criticisms, I think is beautifully done) and I was fascinated enough to want to read the manga.

Like everyone else on here has said, the manga is very confusing. It's like there are pages missing. However, I'm pretty sure that this isn't entirely the mangaka's fault. I mean, I've never heard of a manga being that terribly written where literally nothing makes sense. Especially not a manga that got made into an anime or was allowed to fun for three volumes.

So no matter how hard it is to scanlate these things...I have to rest the blame on the scanlations. Hopefully my Japanese will be good enough to read the original one day...

So a bit about the OVA and why it's such a shame that we can't get a decent version of this manga to read (I can't even find the original Japanese version anywhere...>,>).

First of all, it's not really supposed to have anything to do with the manga at all. Minus the very opening scene which is a flashback to when Matsui and Yuuji were kids (or...er...younger in Yuuji's case), the OVA doesn't cover any of the material in the manga. It's supposed to be a prequel, which is why some people may think it skips around too much; that's because it's setting up all of the conflicts which are brought to a head in the manga (such as Karakawa and Yuuji's conflict, Yuuji's anxieties, Matsui's depression, Yoshino's obsession). Not only are the character really well explored for a one episode OVA, but the animation is really well done with (I'm sorry, but hilarious) 90's J-pop giving the scenes a nice and somewhat surreal tone. It's honestly a bit trippy in some places, but I thought that was interesting in how it helped to develop the characters.

So I liked the OVA and wish that I could read more of the manga. I've re-read it many times and I still can't make too much of it. >,> It does seem like a lot is going on, however. I don't recommend it to people who aren't willing to work to understand it until we have more answers as to what really is happening...

This was so confusing! Just like everyone else I didn't get it. Even after reading it about 3 times, I couldn't fit the pieces together. The only good news about this manga is that it is more coherent than the anime counterpart which at first I thought was supposed to be a prequel to the story, but I guess not....
